I don't have much experience with Vanguard, but I almost wasted £15+ on their version of Angel's Fall by Semih Kaplanoglu as the Kanal D Home Video (also not a great transfer) was OOP, but the Vanguard is one of the worst transfers I have ever seen. I managed to find a few screenshots before purchasing, and glad I didn't!

Anyway, the extras list for this Boonmee release are impressive. I have always preferred interviews and short films to making of featurettes, so looking forward to this release. I haven't seen the film, but I do like elliptical films and I hear this is exactly that!

Default Uncle Boomee...

I just got a reply from New Wave films about their March 28th release of UNCLE BOOMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES blu-ray release as it relates to it's Region coding:

It will be region free. I think the US distributor Strand will also do a Blu-ray, but obviously it won’t come out for a while as the film has only just opened there.

Best regards

Robert Beeson

EDIT: Nevermind! Just saw the last post! Great news that it's region-free!

Are we sure it is a BD-DVD combo pack like the main page suggests? I don't see any indication of that on Amazon. I will pre-order if it is because then, even if the BD is not region-free, I can use my region-free DVD player for the DVD. But will wait if it's BD only.

If the distributor says so, then yes, it will be a BD/PAL DVD combo pack. Amazon are notoriously fickle about specs.

Not that there seems to be much interest in this, but thought I'd pass on the news that HMV are having trouble with getting stock of this title.

I've been contemplating ordering this one, but the past trouble I had dealing with Amazon UK over shipping is making me cautious. Is the movie any good and would it be worth a blind buy? I'm somewhat a fan of Thai films.

It's a great film (incidentally, I was just writing my write up of it for my web-site's weekly Home Entertainment guide and referred to it as "one of the true marvels of the 21st Century cinema"!). Saying that, it's definitely not for every one. I wouldn't say it was indicative of the Thai cinema in general really, either. It's a very slow film, with the emphasis on tone and subtext rather than plot. The plot itself is incredibly slight, and almost summed up in its title alone. I saw it at the London Film Festival Press Screening last year, and it really split the audience (of critics) down the middle.

Default Region Encoding

I asked New Wave if this Blu-ray would play on Region A players and the answer I got was, "It's region free but PAL, not NTSC. So depends on your TV rather than player." My understanding is that Blu-ray are not subject to PAL or NTSC. Can anyone confirm if this Blu-ray disc will play on a North American player? [Yes, I am new here. Thanks!]

As far as I know, like you, PAL/NTSC does not apply to blu-ray.

What they could be referring to is this: they are releasing both UB on blu and dvd; they could mean region free for the blu and PAL for the dvd. But it would be advisable to check - you could wait for some sites like DVD Beaver to see what the specs are.

Welcome to the board, Daigoarima

Edit - Doing some further checking, on some Blu discs, the extra material/special features can be PAL encoded; they could also be referring to that. Like I said, it would definitely pay to look at some reviews first.

Great to see such a high video score in that review. It's such a dark film visually, so I'm pleased to hear that its practically perfect.

Yeah, the extras or menus/intro (trailers/warnings) can be in PAL, and that can often make it unplayable for the region A folks as they can't get through to the menu to navigate to the film. So it is worth holding out and getting confirmation if it does have PAL content.

Is anyone able to comment if there are any problematic PAL content on this release that would make it unplayable on a Region A machine, i.e, extras, menus
