I notice that Universal appears to be releasing their own Blu-Ray of Charade on July 9th, 2013.

Or maybe from a Universal master that's been raped by DNR, EE, etc?

Yeah who knows. Chances are they will not get the Criterion master since Criterion paid all that money to clean up and enhance the film. I doubt universal will pay for that, they would probably use their own assets for that. I hope I'm wrong.

Considering Criterion has had their disc out for several years, and the fact that there are more Universal titles in the Criterion library than any other major studio, I think they'll probably be happy to exchange one master for free just to support the relationship between the two companies.

I was surprised to see this at Best Buy today.

Had been thinking about the Criterion for awhile. What's the verdict on the PQ of the Universal release?

Hey, thanks for the reminder, forgot this was coming out next week. This was being talked about a while ago in the Criterion thread. Just checked and it does look like it's being carried at all BB's in my area. Surprising indeed. Also just $12.99 as well, I used a RZ cert and knocked it down to $7.99. Keeping my fingers crossed on PQ. I previously owned the previous Universal Charade DVD relelase and was pleased with the picture on that one. That DVD release of Charade was actually the bonus disc which was included with The Truth About Charlie. I kept Charade and tossed the main feature.

It was actually in a special display setup in one of those cardboard towers. Most of all of the others were recycled from films that were released with "Universal 100" slipcovers (Smokey and the Bandit, Mama Mia, The Sting, Scarface... and a bunch of others I can't remember... basically they just gave them all "best of decades" slipcovers). I had to double take to make sure this was a blu-ray since I'm pretty sure they also released Charade as part of the U100, but it was a DVD-only. Weird that they would just sneak this one in there.

Hopefully it's $12.99 next week, would love to pick it up for $7.99 (provided the quality measures up to the PQ on the Criterion disc). I dont' think that is one of the stronger Criterion discs anyway, although the precedent is usually that Universal's version will be worse.

I'll be interested to hear some reviews of the new Universal Blu, as I haven't yet decided between buying that or the Criterion Blu. I haven't seen the film since VHS days.

I have the Criterion Blu ray and its a very handsome print.

Barnes and Nobles 50% off sale is going on right now. You can order Charade Criterion blu ray for $19.99.

I will also be interested in hearing the comparison with the Universal transfer.

I'm very happy with the Criterion blu ray version.

Great film too.

I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of Charade a couple nights ago, and I did not notice any problems with the picture quality. In fact, the movie looked downright fantastic to me considering its age. Certain scenes are quite remarkable in high definition.

I've got the Universal release of CHARADE. I'm afraid I can not offer a comparison to the Criterion version because I do not own it.

I can tell you that I think the Universal release looks very good indeed. To my eye, it looks much like the Criterion screen caps. Again, I don't have the Criterion version and I don't claim them to be the same...but my eyes can't discern an obvious difference just on those caps.

The disc shows some very mild edge enhancement but it's much less than most other Universal releases and not intrusive (and I'm very sensitive to EE). Moderate grain and excellent color are present.

If you don't already have the Criterion release, then I think this is a very pleasing alternative. I see no significant problems with the Universal disc.

For a 19.99$ SRP, I'm guessing bare-bones or the generic featurettes they shipped along with the Universal 100th Anniversary edition DVD. Even Criterion had only the Donen commentary as a meaty extra.

Probably the same as the 100th Anniversary DVD:
