Very close to a +1---which I'll accept as not bad considering I've only been Blu-capable for about three weeks. My next door neighbor just got a 42" plasma and has come to accept the fact that moving into the HD world "means getting all new stuff," as he put it.
But he's going to be a hard sell on Blu-Ray because he wants instant HD gratification and he's a huge Star Trek fan---damn you, Paramount! I haven't seen much discussion of the Star Trek factor, I suppose because Paramount doesn't seem to be rushing all their Trek properties out on HD-DVD...but I read a lot of opinions about how George Lucas could singlehandedly end the format war without any mention of the Roddenberry contingent. I understand that the Trek franchise doesn't have the market share that Star Wars does, but Trek has a lot more content and a lot of fans who want to buy (and buy everything). If, in the near future, Paramount decides to release the rest of the original series on HD-DVD, or adds TNG or DS9 or any of the feature films, I fear he'll be lost to the other side...and I don't know what I could say to sway him, other than making fun of the Trek fan buying into the inferior technology. It makes Paramount's decision seem that much more unfortunate, because content will drive the decision-making process for a lot of folks. I never bought anything on VHS for the same reason I tired of buying cassettes---total lack of durability---but the one film I bought was Fantasia; I didn't make the move to DVD until I saw the Fantasia Anthology on the shelf, and then I took it home and knew I had to own something on which to play it; Disney's firm and exclusive commitment to Blu-Ray made it that much easier for me to take the step up into HD media. I can't damn my buddy for what he wants to watch... |
