I discovered him only in the last year, after being blown away by Café Society and quickly became one of my favorite directors. Btw, funny how seeing a film in the right circumstances can totally change your sense for cinema.
I've seen 30 of his movies now and, except a few ones, I loved, or at least liked, all of them. He became the go-to-director for those evenings when I'm uncertain which film to watch. One criticism I've heard on his filmography is that he made always the same movie, which of course I do not agree at all. Being a true auteur there are some recurring themes, but the switch in tones and registers are impressive. I find impressive his run from the late 70's to early 90's. My favorite films are The Purple Rose of Cairo and Zelig. I find extremely underrated September and The Mighty Aphrodite. Before him I used the word genius only for Chaplin. But he also rightfully deserves it. |
