I can't get enough of the little chap at the moment - he rarely makes outright bad films and has a fine body of work (the last two words very important in that sentence).
So what are your favourite films of his, and what sort era? 70s, 80s or 90s? With Diane Keaton or Mia Farrow? The latter ones set in London with randoms? Mine are: Annie Hall - funniest film I've seen Manhattan - love the whole aura of it Crimes and Misdemeanours - one of the darkest films of his Bullets Over Broadway - even though the characters are quite annoying even for him |

He is definitely one of my favorite directors. I prefer his Diane Keaton period for sure.
- Annie Hall is among my top 5 favorite movies of all time. It has to be one of the smartest romantic comedies ever made. - Sleeper..... I don't usually go for slapstick but this movie always cracks me up. And I think everyone should own an orgasmatron ![]() - Vickie Cristina Barcelona is my favorite of the most recent Allen movies. I also really enjoy Crimes and Misdemeanors |

What's Up Tiger Lily? is absolutely hilarious.
Manhattan Murder Mystery is just as funny but in a much drier way. (This one also kind of turned me around on Alan Alda - I still don't really care for him but at the very least I hate him a lot less because of this). Crimes and Misdemeanors might be his best though. Excellent all the way through. |

![]() Take the Money and Run, though much maligned, is probably even closer to his original looney non-sequitir New Yorker written pieces than Bananas , Zelig, New York Stories or Purple Rose of Cairo. So is Love and Death, although Woody confessed that one was intentionally trying to homage 40's Road-era Bob Hope. ![]() Then we got that whole 80's phase where he thought we didn't notice he was baldface-plagiarizing specific Bergman and Fellini films (remember when we thought "Smiles of A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy" was supposed to be a version of Shakespeare?...Yeah, him and "Lion King". ![]() Case in point, used to think Radio Days was his one good "sane", sentimental, funny personal movie out of the entire 80's...And then it dawned on me that he was just relocating "Amarcord" to Long Island. ![]() Last edited by EricJ; 02-27-2011 at 06:41 PM. |

There is something about his slapstick that is just comedy gold, especially in Play it Again Sam.
I watched Alice recently and that is one of the very very few that I didn't enjoy, and got bored with pretty early on. Not that funny or interesting, and no Woody either. |

Wonder Wheel, his next pic, opens limited on 12/1 - an unusual date for a film of his.

Don't judge him on his post-nineties output, which is often more atrocious than not. |

I've only seen Take The Money And Run and Blue Jasmine, both of which I loved. I've also seen Casino Royale and Fading Gigolo but he didn't direct either of those.
I really want to watch Deconstructing Harry and Midnight in Paris. |

Woody Allen is one of my all time favourites. His films have made huge impressions on me: comically, dramatically, tragically - often all in the space of the same movie.
My favourites would be Annie Hall, Radio Days, Hannah and Her Sisters and The Purple Rose of Cairo. Looking forward to his new one because I always love his straight dramas (he described Wonder Wheel as "very serious" recently) and Kate Winslet is great. Pretty mad that he's managed to literally make a movie every year for over forty years now. |

I haven't seen his whole catalog so I'm much more familiar with Allen's more recent films (21st century). However, I'm a big fan of his writing style and I think his characters and the situations they find themselves in are often quite clever.
I'd have to say my favorites at the moment are: Vicky Cristina Barcelona Midnight in Paris Match Point To Rome with Love I'm really looking forward to Wonder Wheel - there's something romantic and idyllic about Coney Island and I hope Allen is able to capture some of that magic on-screen. |
