From what I am reading in a few days (Oct 12?) Sony will be releasing a $399 PS3.

Tho ONLY reason I would want some manufacturers to supply Blu-ray players closer in price to HD DVD players is so the HD DVD consortium can stop using the price advantage as an argument for superiority.

Unfortunately what some customers will see is a $299 0r $249 Toshiba hd-dvd player (the 1080i version). So there's still some catching up to do. Let's hope a cheaper PS3 is on the way, it's hard to resist a multi-tasking blu-ray machine.

Understand what is happening here. The price of HD-DVD is going UP while the price of Blu-ray is going DOWN. Get it??

People who keep clamoring for the $299 or even $199 BD players need to understand the economics of this. The R&D dollars have to be recouped somehow. The well has run dry for HD-DVD. The give-away-machines program cannot last forever. The BDA and the CE's have played this smart from the start.

And we are now going to see Blu-ray eclipse HD-DVD on price. It's all down hill to the finish line from here.

i so hope thats not true seeing a BD player already for $299 and $199 the more money people spend into a player the better for the company that makes them and also the more money people spend on a player the more support for blu-ray for people who buy a bd player but if it gets that cheap you would need to buy 2 at once not just 1

I know you and I agree on this because of the "Thumbs Up" I gave your post the other day. There's "cheap" and there's "less expensive". All consumer electronics become "less expensive" over time. And the ones that are in fact "cheap" are clearly exposed.

Because Blu-ray did not come to market "cheap" it is correctly tracking the "less expensive" model. HD-DVD on the other hand came to market "cheap". To now build strength and offest current and upcoming R&D costs (such as TL51 development) they now must charge more for a inferior ("cheap") product to play catch-up with Blu-ray. This is why pricing now between comparable true 1080p models is virtually $0.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Econ 101.

HD-DVD is more expensive on a "per-byte" basis and that cost is increasing not decreasing. They have not added any value to the product. This is where they will continue to be exposed as "cheap" (aka: inferior).

Default BD will win in the opinion of my local electronics stores

I live near a small to meduim city and i went "fishing" at my local stores, Sears, Sam Goody, H.H. Gregg and the like. anyway i tested their sales people and asked them which one of the formats were selling faster/more. They while they were pretty up to speed on each format, they said that BD is kicking HD's @ss. Sears has a HDDVD in stock but you have to order the BD player, the dude said that the customers were ordering the BD player over the instock HDDVD

HD-DUD is getting beat at my local shops as well... there are stacks of HD-DUD players but you have to actually ask for a BD player because they in such low stock of them. Even PS3s are selling out and there are massive piles of XBUTTs just collecting dust. Halo 3 didn't manage to shift as many consoles as they had hoped...

If you checked his previous posts and join date I think he passes the test of not being a troll. Just because someone has an opinion that is not waving the Blu flag blindly doesn't make him a Fudmeister.
