Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)

Back in April when news of the project first emerged, the word on the street was that Disney had in mind "leads in the vein of Tina Fey and Melissa McCarthy" for its developing Hocus Pocus sequelboot. The Mouse House has just seen the first half of that wish come true (at least to some extent): Tina Fey has joined the project as a producer, via her Little Stranger production company. It's unclear yet whether she's planning to star as well as oversee.

Yes, we are talking about the same Hocus Pocus, the 1993 family comedy starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as a coven of witches accidentally resurrected at Hallowe'en by youngsters Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Vinessa Shaw.

According to The Tracking Board's intel, the new film will pick up years later, and centre on a housewife related to the original witch trio. When her children get on the wrong side of some other witches while they're out trick-or-treating, she teams up with a local witch-hunter to save them.

Fey, we'd imagine, is being courted to play the mom, with the no-doubt broader witch-hunter role the one Disney would like McCarthy (or their "McCarthy type") for. With Fey aboard, however, it's not impossible that it could turn into a vehicle for her and regular comedic BFF Amy Poehler. There seem to be no plans to bring back any of the original stars, but cameo reappearances don't seem out of the question.

That's all total speculation for the time being, since we're a long way from a cast or a director... or anything. With Fey's involvement though, Hocus Pocus 2 is suddenly looking more interesting than it might have done. We'll keep you posted.

I think this one would be better off not happening. Starting next month the original will be on TV until after Halloween due to the sheer popularity with children and adults. Let's not ruin something else with an unneeded sequel, especially one that won't even feature the original cast.

If a sequel is necessary, why the heck can't they just get the original three back? Tina Fey won't do better box office. Put Najimy in a fat suit and it would be fine.

I'd rather have the original cast back, who cares if Najimy has lost a lot of weight? It could be a joke when she gets brought back with each of them looking better than before.

I prefer her 90s roles as well. She was more versatile in her younger years.

Disney said that while they're developing a witch movie with Tina Fey it is not Hocus Pocus 2:

The film, currently known as Untitled Witch Project, will be produced by Fey and Cinderella producer Allison Shearmur in what’s described as falling in the vein of Ghostbusters, with 30 Rock Golden Globe winner Fey also attached to star. I would love a sequel, but only if all three of them returned. I don't expect the others to return, but seeing a new set of kids bring the witches back, and somehow toss in the return from the original movie as well. Could be lots of fun if they did it right.

The 'Hocus Pocus' sequel is finally happening - live at Disney World

When Better Midler told "Hocus Pocus" fans that she and her castmates were game for a sequel to the 1993 movie, this probably isn't what she was hoping for.

Disney has announced the "Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular," a live stage show set after the events of the movie that will only be presented at Disney World in Florida. The show will take place as part of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which runs Sept. 15 through Nov. 1.

According to the show's official description, The Sanderson Sisters "gather together sinister shadows, nefarious nightmares and the power of their frightful friends to conjure the ultimate Hocus Pocus Party Potion and cast a spell on everyone in the Magic Kingdom Park."


Their friends include some of Disney's most dastardly villains, including Maleficent ("Sleeping Beauty"), Oogie Boogie ("The Nightmare Before Christmas") and Dr. Facilier ("The Princess and the Frog").

While this news isn't as satisfying as a new movie would be, those headed to Disney World to celebrate Halloween are in for a very special treat -- and probably a couple of tricks.

Would be cool to see this. Maybe this will show Disney just how popular Hocus Pocus is and we do get that sequel.

I didn't even know this was a thing but I doubt it will ever get made. LOL@becoming a stage production, I doubt it will ever be a popular one.

Disappointing.

But I was wondering how they were going to override the ending to the first movie anyway. Seems like they'd be permanently dead, turning to stone and blowing up.
