Bleh...too 'awkward' looking for my tastes. Fox got it just right with this:

The classic poster art with just enough design refresh...

Hey, if I was Japanese, there's probably some subtle design thing going on there that I would be absolutely enthralled by.

But I'm not.

It's not just in Japan. The UK and other countries are getting that artwork too. I've never seen the movie, but I like the composition a little better here,. The only thing I find distracting is the giant eyebrow in the corner. The US artwork makes it look like they're falling out of her eyeball. Again never saw the movie, so maybe that happens. I don't particularly care for either to be honest.

The Japanese and UK covers show the submarine used on the mission along with an image of Raquel Welch. The US cover shows them falling out an eye.
[Show spoiler]The ship in the film was destroyed by anti-bodies or some defense mechanism of the human body and the survivors actually did exit via the eye.

Just saw that this dropped to 5.99 (TOWERING INFERNO also) and am probably going to snatch it up. Very good early memory seeing this 1st time in 69 on double bill TRUE GRIT (no kidding!) at Century 25 theater in San Jose area. Have rewatched it a lot in recent years (whenever comcast offers the free week of premiums), but love PROTEUS so much that I think I need to have it available all the time.

Finally grabbed this from the BB bin and have been meaning to do so to upgrade from the DVD for years. I always felt they did too much work on that release as it just looked a bit bright and the color seemed off somehow-particularly in the effects work. Some have posted photos of the old Laserdisc transfer in the LDDB forum and that looks a bit different.

So imagine my surprise to see this wonderful transfer with the full image presented and the mono presented losslessly! Everything seems much better balanced in the effects work than the DVD so that's a big upgrade for me. The detail is incredible, the grain looks very nice and the saturation levels overall look pretty good to me. There had been some who said the skintones appeared too saturated, but I don't know the film as well as others so I'll defer to them. I do remember seeing this first on the late night TV airings and think it's the perfect time to see this classic. The reinsertion of the original title info card is grand, though I don't know why they've never included the original 4 track stereo mix that this supposedly had. I guess it was lost or deteriorated. The mono far outshines the 5.1 despite it's inherent limitations.
...Except one nagging thing kept popping up...From the opening shot onward and particularly in all the control room sequences there is a prevailing sense of teal everywhere. The opening plane landing sequence has all of the lighting and even the car interior as teal, and every wall in the secret base complex has gone from gray to teal-ish. It's visible in even some of the CAH shots shown here.
http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=3165&d2=3166&c=1325

I'm not trying to complain but it is visible and obvious to the eye-especially since they did a lovely HD scan of the two trailers which are on the disc in scope-and they both show everything looking the way the previous editions looked. It's interesting to see the new transfer look one way and then the HD trailer show all the walls of the complex as being gray again. And it's not in every shot and can vary in degrees.

I dunno, am I just prone to looking for this in Fox catalog releases? There were a number of times on my monitor I felt it jumped out and then others when I thought the image looked wonderful. In any case the DVD is not even in the same league and this is a worthy upgrade for the lossless mono and better rendering of the effects alone.

I think Fantastic Voyage is a must have but I like cheesy movies from my childhood I find 2001: A Space Odyssey boring and don't need the upgrade many people think its a great film.

Looks like a good time to buy it (cheap) so I did. No digital code I assume? I see Vudu wants $4 more than what the physical disc sells for.

None of the Fox Studio Classics titles came with a digital copy.

Thumbs up Raquel Welch meets Salvador Dali

Did you know that 20th Century Fox hired Salvador Dali as a artistic consultant for the promotional material (see second & third paintings below) for Fantastic Voyage and its New York City premiere back in 1966? Salvador Dali was quite enamored with Raquel Welch and he even painted her portrait (see first painting below) at the St. Regis Hotel while she was clad only in a bikini.

20th Century Fox even commissioned a six-minute film to document this particular event: Dali's Fantastic Dream directed by Albert and David Maysles. Even though I'm unable to share this six-minute film with all of you here, I can post a couple of pictures of the most exquisite Raquel Welch during her encounter at the St. Regis Hotel with the famous Spanish surrealist painter from way back in 1966.

So... when should we expect Disney to pump out a 4K UHD release? The 60th Anniversary in 2026? I guess it didn't really hit me right away that when Disney bought 20th Century Fox it also meant we may not see as many Fox films get the 4K treatment as speedily. Perhaps I should just scoop up the blu-ray while I can.

I heard a 4k is being made.
That's why the price has dropped every where for this movie.

List price is $10, so a typical standard markdown for Amazon.

I got it for $5.99 back in 2018 and it wasn't going OOP just because it was cheap.

As a Fox title, it's probably already OOP, there's just still tons of unmoved stock out there. I'd definitely buy it right now if you think you'll ever be interested instead of waiting for it to sell out ala Working Girl or Cocoon. No way that Disney ever re-releases this.
