I haven't bought many and largely think they are grossly overpriced. None of the ones I have bought seemed to have PQ/AQ that was particularly special and I really don't get why their releases are held in such high regard here. There are a few I'm wanting to pick up but buying them are pretty low on my list of priorities.

I voted "other". I agree with the general consensus that Criterion provides unparalleled quality and treats films with respect but I value them most for the restraint they show by not forcing us to watch useless disclaimers and trailers. Nothing waters down my excitement more than having to skip through crap every time I hit the stop button. Lionsgate, I'm looking at you!

On the extras front, Criterion seems to be putting less on their discs these days. I expected a little more for Rosemary's Baby. Perhaps some deleted scenes or even the made-for-TV sequel as a bonus. This isn't a complaint, just an observation.

I don't believe in the arrogance they have though. A lot of their DVDs looked like crap.
I see Beverly Hills Chihuahua 1 and 2 in your collection.

I don't have any Criterion Blu ray's although I want to buy Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ and David Fincher's The Game.

I would have liked Criterion to still have the rights to Se7en and The Rock.

This applys the most to me. That is said from a region B guy who much compares prices of different regions, though.

i chose other because no one choice was sufficient.

while i haven't seen every film in the criterion series, i have seen a few and like them.

if a studio wants to give a film special treatment and give us the best available picture and audio as well as more extras than other studios and charge a bit more, so be it. i'll spend the extra $ and get the criterion version.

i also treat them as collectibles. i like the thicker, sturdier, clear cases and the uniformity of their spines when displayed together.

I mainly just blind buy Criterions, but that's only because I get them used for about $10 each.

They so happen to put out a lot of films I'm interested in. Most of mine are more of the so called modern films versus some of the older films. Not that there's anything wrong with those, they just don't fit my tastes as much. Plus the care and quality of the transfer usually are the best. So it's double the pleasure.

The films they release, whether I end up loving them or hating them, are films that I'm glad I get to watch at least once.

I buy them because they offer an interesting selection of films, many of which I'd never seen before buying the blu-ray.

Some of my favorite blu-ray releases have been put out by Criterion, so that encourages me to keep checking out more. I had a handful of their releases throughout the years on DVD, and also borrowed a few from the library, but I've really been more interested in them the last few years - especially on blu-ray

I buy them to make me feel better about my shortcomings.

Just kidding. I'll buy a movie if I like it. Their label has introduced me to a bunch of movies that I wouldn't have seen otherwise but when it comes to buying them, I just buy the titles that I want to own. That's my plan anyways; so far, I only have one Criterion BD (I used to have a couple of DVDs).

Honestly, I think people buy Criterion BDs just to fit in or come of as Filmniks. Criterion has a great catalog but "Come the eff on" most of that fluff is just for completist or people with flip phones.

If I love the movie I'll buy it whether it's Criterion or not.

I like Criterions because you discover some films that you weren't familiar with. And there are really great ones which the ordinary cinephile should learn to discover.

1. Seven Samurai
2. Seventh Seal
3. Rashomon
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Godzilla
6. Kind Hearts and Coronets [DVD]
7. Night of the Hunter
8. 12 Angry Men
9. The Third Man
10. The Leopard
11. Battle of Algiers
12. CHE

I own just one Criterion Release, The Curious Case of BB, because it's the only Criterion with Spanish subtitles. I don't understand why they can't put spanish subtitles on their releases.

Because it's just impossible that they actually enjoy the films

Yeah, they can't all be cinema classics like Bad Teacher, Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter, and... well I stopped looking through your collection right there. I think that speaks for itself.

Who's buying the fluff now?
