Nah it didnt come out of no where, the 3D conversion was completed before Scotts suicide. Warners has been mulling what to do with this release whether to do it in theaters or to go straight to DVD, guess we now know what they intend to do.

I think i've only seen Top Gun once, years ago! This will be a day one purchase for me for sure.
Ya looks like they canned the sequel about a week ago or so.

There were rumours this may get a cinema release, possibly in China in Feb 2013, guess plans have changed.

The conversion is done by Legend3D who also put up the money themselves to convert it.

Legend 3D worked on this conversion. Their recent releases have had positive-quality 3D reviews.

Placed a pre-order this morning with Amazon.com for the $27.99 price.

Went to place a second order for a relative of mine and found out that Amazon is already changing the price, because of an argument with their distributor, and currently the pre-order page is not functioning until they can come to an agreement on a set price.

The Amazon lady rep on the phone who I talked to said orders already placed will have original prices honored if there is an increase with the lowest price guarantee still in effect.

Iron Eagle I think was the name of another Jet Combat movie series. I guess Tom Cruise backed out of the Top Gun sequel.

I'd be interested to hear how the conversion turns out.

Wow...kind of shocked this didn't get a theatrical release 0.0. Even so I'm still excited for the conversion and hope it's good

IMO the movie's not aged well enough to merit a general theatrical release (it's more a cult/retro movie now), but I am surprised that they didn't do a limited 3D broadcast to theaters through Fathom or something. Heck, WarGames got a limited broadcast to theaters to promote the crappy direct-to-DVD "sequel" a couple of years ago.

I liked Top Gun but in 3D? I'm on the fence about this one. It would have been cool to see a sequal however. To bad its not gonna happen.

That's a shame. Both for the sad demise of the director, and for the loss of the movie. I bet an even more action packed sequel in native 3D would have been kick ass. But then any movie with a lot of fighter jet action would be a lot of fun. Here is to hoping someone decides to make one.

Another Iron Eagle as Zivouhr mentioned might be a good one, if it was done well with plenty of combat scenes.

I will wait for the reviews before I fly into this 3D danger zone.

Oh wo am I kidding. I'm all over this like a cheap suit!

Can't wait for this. Not a mega die hard fan of the movie, but I had a good time watching a screening at insomniac cinema at regency theaters toward the end of summer . I'll probably buy this and I bet Legend 3d did a really good job with the conversion, considering how the late Tony Scott was so amazed by it himself

Thought this was worth bumping seeing as another thread had been started, even though this was still on page 1.

I only saw Top Gun one time when I was a kid, but remember a lot of it was about Tom Cruise and his girlfriend, with not enough jet fighting action.

If the 3D is on par with Titanic's strong 3D, and not weak 3D along the lines of most of I Robot's conversion, then I'll probably consider it.

I'd love to see Behind Enemy Lines converted into strong 3D. The jet sequence in the beginning was really cool, great survival movie too, and the main villain sniper resembles Nico Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV, in his striped jogging suit (this movie out before GTA IV).

Another Iron Eagle in 3D would be cool too, agreed. Along with a new Top Gun II 3D. I can understand why they would hold off in light of the director's death, but may consider it again in another year.
