Default Top Gun 3D Blu-ray (1986) [Region Free]

Top Gun had a worldwide release on 3D Blu-ray. The best version is the 2020 German edition as that is the only one to include the remastered 2D disc. It's identifiable by the green FSK12 rating, while the older version has a blue FSK16 rating. The worst version is the UK edition which doesn't include a 2D disc at all. In any case, all versions are REGION FREE.

Top Gun 3D Blu-ray

Tom Cruise will fly as Maverick on the big screen once again when Paramount re-releases Tony Scott's 1986 adrenaline-filled thriller Top Gun to theaters in 3D. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Jerry Bruckheimer produced action flick will join Titanic and Star Wars: Episode I as catalog titles slated for a 2012 3D re-release.

Paramount has contracted San Diego-based Legend3D to handle the 2D to 3D conversion work for Top Gun. Rob Hummel, the company's CEO, introduced a four-minute clip of converted footage to attendees of the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam earlier today. Legend3D, which in the past has worked on Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon and Green Lantern, is also helping to fund the conversion process for Paramount.

According to THR, Hummel stated, "We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense... As I understand it, they (Paramount) are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I know they want to get Tony Scott's approval before they go forward."

Paramount is hoping that Tom Cruise, who is starring in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol for the studio in December, has not lost his box-office drawing power. Top Gun was box office smash in 1986 and has pulled in over $350 million worldwide in its lifetime.

Top Gun was recently treated to a repackaged Blu-ray, which hit stores last month to commemorate the film's 25th anniversary. The trailer below is for the film's 2D theatrical re-release from last spring.

This should be good if they can convert it well. I hope they do a good job because I'd love to see it in 3D!

Still dont get how they can take something that was never there and add it in... but there you go. I guess if they can do it for titanic they can do it for top gun.

while they are it, they should remix it in 7.1 surround sound.

Should be awesome in 3D. T.C. doesn't do much for me. Wait let me re-phrase that...T.C. does nothing for me except his couch jumping made me laugh. However, some of those flying scenes could be amazing with depth and dimension. No doubt a 3D BD will follow. I'm soon going to have to get a part time job.

Apparently there's a Top Gun 2 that will be made in 3D as well.

My only disappointment is that Hollywood is STILL immersed primarily with DEPTH being the number one aspect for 3D presentations. The link states that for Top Gun, a 3D depth script was created. Hello? Is anyone home? How about a 3D pop-out script? We need to see both depth and pop-outs to satisfy 3D junkies!

Depth script refers to the actual modification of the 3D image, where each shot is looked at and judged to where the objects should be placed, including out of screen objects. And for a film which is being converted to 3D, when it didn't have the format in mind during its initial releses, I'd say they're best working with what they have, rather than force objects out of the screen to grab attention.

As much as I love the movie, I am not sure if the 3D will be great. It's an old movie and that will be tough to convert. To me, 3D is about depth and some cool pop out. SW EP1 is a let down for me, and recently, Nemo. These studios are trying to cash in and that's healthy for the 3D. But at some point, I have to draw a line and not buying every 3D movies that come out.

I am glad though that they went back and remaster the film so it should look great picture wise.

I certainly won't rebuy it.

I got Top Gun for cheap and I kind of regret it.

My wife watched and enjoyed it though. I guess Tom is cute.

Not really a movie I thought about for a 3D reboot, but I'll check it out.

To be fair that's not quite true, this has been talked about for a while and Tony Scott was involved before his death so it's not exactly come out of nowhere. I hear that the planned sequel has now been canned, so at least we still have this release to look forward to.

I think i've only seen Top Gun once, years ago! This will be a day one purchase for me for sure.
