Just a funny thought, but why don't people attack Toshiba just on its branding. Toshiba has been, all will always remain, a third-tier electronics manufacture.

Three years ago, if you had purchased a DVD player and the difference was $100 between the Sony and the Toshiba, you would unquestioningly choose the Sony. It has always been a better electronics manufacture with a better reliability record (batteries aside).

I just don't get why know why people haven't attached more of a branding aspect to this war. It's like everybody just forgot that Toshiba was a wallflower. Blu-ray offers a choice of manufactures with proven records, and HD-DVD gives you Toshiba (third-tier electronics manufacture) or Venturer (first-tier bird cage liner).

I will give Toshiba one nod about 3 years ago they made 160 gig TiVo DVD-R burner. That machine has worked probably due to that great software TiVo developed. So I guess you can call Toshiba in this household a 1 hit wonder

I am 100% sold on Blu-ray (technologically) over HD-DVD, but how on earth can Blu-ray win the standards battle with nonsense like this:

I went to a Best Buy in Austin, TX last week. The comparable HD-DVD player was almost $100 less than Blu-ray player I was interested in. I was offered NINE FREE HD-DVDs with the purchase of my HD-DVD player. The Blu-ray cost more, and there were NO free Blu-ray DVDs offered.

With the cost of even used "next-generation" DVDs being in the low to mid twenties, the effective cost of my HD-DVD player after factoring in the 9 free HD-DVDs was only $200!!!

Blu-ray vendors! HEAR US! This is a LAND GRAB situation! You cannot just sit there and convince 99% of the market that you have a better mouse trap and that they should pay so much more for it.

Very few of us really appreciate the fact that Blu-ray DVDs can use Java and Javascript to interact with the user and all that implies. I will be angry if we lose a better technology because it's being sold by geeks instead of people who know how to market and compete in free markets.

I could not be a bigger fan of Blu-ray, but when it comes to my pocket book, they had better try harder if they want my business. I bought an HD-DVD player last week, and I'm still mad about it.
Not to label the original poster "one who lurks under bridges" but too many things in the OP don't jive in my book...

The claim is made that this individual could not be a bigger fan of Blu-ray, yet cost was the deciding factor in making the purchase. To me that's like saying "I really like the New England Patriots, they're my favorite NFL team but there was a sale on Miami Dolphins t-shirts so I bought one of those instead before going to the Dolphins/Patriots game" (Apologies to Dolphins and Patriots fans)

Would not the Blu-ray fan know that HD-DVD has always had lower than blu pricing? And accepted that as part of blu's winning strategy (more CEs)?

To the question of no free Blu-ray movies offered, I find it hard to believe that while surfing all of these Blu sites, or researching the soon-to-be-made "major purchase" nothing was seen of the ongoing 5 free movies with Blu player promotion. If a $100 in savings means so much, why wasn't an effort made into finding the best Blu deal? What about waiting 3 more weeks for the $399 PS3 which costs the same as that $400 HD-DVD player? (This week Best Buy sweetens the purchase of a Samsung 1400 by promoting 7 free movies.)

IMO the original post leads me to believe that all is not as it seems. (Did someone just have to get themselves Transformers in HD last week? )

I live in Austin. Which BB did you visit? I frequent the one at Loop 1 and US Hwy 290. The people there are pretty nice and very helpful but I wouldn't accuse them of being clueful. I've seen them more than once selling an upscaling DVD player to a customer asking about HDM.

I think I am agreeing with your post in that Blu could make their free promos more obvious to the less informed consumer. I don't fear the cost difference. I think more content suited for the masses and a bigger CE representation will win in the end. I do feel bad for those that just went into HDM and made their choice on cheapest.

I never considered the higher starting price of stand-alones a strategy... I guess it's working, because this year we will have quite a few more companies making Blu-ray players. How many more HD-DVD player manufacturers are there? One. If you can count Venturer as a manufacturer.

And prices WILL come down as more and more players are introduced into the market.

Thumbs up Points Well Taken

OK, I think the advice of "You should have gotten on and asked a few questions first instead of coming out with an angry post first" (paraphrased) was the best.

No, I'm not a troll. I think the "moron" accusations probably fit better.

OK - I'm selling this HD-DVD piece-o-* and going to find the best Blu-ray deal.

Lord, it takes FOREVER just to "boot up" everytime I turn it on!

Thanks, for all the replies. You were all pretty civil considering ...

Now, to review threads that point me to the best purchase.

Cheers.

Can you return it instead? If it was only last week they might take it back.

You might want to check out the 40Gb PS3 and the new Sharp player, both are $399.

If your angry about buying an HD-DUD player then just simply return it. BTW here is where I recommend you starting off your search for your Blu-Ray player: https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29

Thanks, for the pointer!

I think I'm going to sell it on Craig's List and just sell the HD-DVDs one at a time, too. I may just come out ahead on this error!

Thanks, again.

Yes, I definitely fitted the less informed consumer profile, which means I had no right to get that bent out of shape about it.

Thanks.

Default I Understand

Before I did my own research I thought about going with an HD player. I came here to this site and I have changed my mind because I have become more informed (Getting a Panasonic DMP-BD10AK ). I understand where you come from. I think Sony needs to be more competitive price-wise even though they have a far superior player. A lot of people will buy a player and not do their research. They will buy whats cheapest thinking that one is just as good as the other. I want Blu-ray to win, and I think they are getting lots of good support, but they do need to lower prices for the average un-informed consumer.
