Watched it last night. Epic film, love it all over again every time I see it.
It looks pretty damn good. Better than I have ever seen it. Grainy, nice colors; it was shot on location in South Africa, so there is lots of dust and haze in the air. Good distance detail through the haze, the dry terrain and textures give it an overall brown and tan color palette. Even after seeing it for the umpteenth time, this movie still gets me. Col. Durnford (as the zulus overrun his position): "Sergeant, you're to ride back to Natal. When you see the Bishop tell him, that is, tell his daughter, that I was obliged to remain here with my infantry. Now go. God go with you." |

never seen this film so decided to check out the review here, but stopped after this......
'Years ago when our sons were toddlers and I had put on our local PBS station to keep them occupied for a while, I was gobsmacked (an appropriately British term) to stumble upon a completely peculiar English children's show entitled Bananas in Pajamas. The title pretty much sums up the entertainment value of the series, and when my wife returned home later that day, I told her about it, adding, "It's clear to me now why the British lost the Empire." epic fail, its an australian show....when trying to be funny at least research what your saying..IQ fail, the accents alone gave it away! what isolation this reviewer must live in. ill look elswhere for a review. |

Finally got round to getting hold of the Blu-ray of this.
I always want to compare it to the more formally ambitious The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968). On its own terms, Zulu Dawn is still a good film, with some quite striking cinematography and well-handled action. Peter O'Toole (I'm not usually a fan) gives a stand-out performance. I know it's perhaps not a title that that many people would be interested in, but think Severin put together quite a decent edition here – even allowing for some of the limitations of the picture transfer, including the rather patchy effect of grain in the skies. Just nice to have it in HD with the mono audio options. |
