I'm no expert, but can't low bit-rates be a sign of good compression? In 2001 the bit-rate gets low too and that disc looks awesome. I'm just not sure that we can measure quality with the bit-rate.

That sounds like things the red ants say. The whole argument with them is that BD gives the disc capacity and bandwidth advantage to make better PQ possible. The low bitrates on SM3 correlate with PQ that is less impressive than the PQ on recent Fox releases such as Silver Surfer where the bitrates are noticeably higher.

I agree that it's something they say, but it doesn't make it completely false just because they say it. If the disc has good compression then it wouldn't need to fully utilize the extra bit-rate. I'm all for having the extra capacity, but I figure with technology improving the compression on these discs should just get better and better. Now I have no idea whether S3 has good compression or not I just don't think we can judge the PQ on bit-rate alone. Like I was saying before 2001 has low bit-rates and it looks great and even Troy has some lower bit-rates and it also has great PQ. I'll give it to you that FOX has put out some amazing discs with great PQ and high bit-rates, but 28 Weeks Later has a higher bit-rate than FF4: ROTSS and most people would say FF4 has the better PQ. I don't think it's as easy as reading the bit-rate on your PS3.

Troy to me is a prime example of low bitrates correlating with mediocre PQ. I don't judge PQ by bitrate. I judge PQ with my eyes and then look at the bitrate to see if that is the explanation. Day After Tomorrow is a recent Fox release that has high bitrates but where the PQ to my eyes is not outstanding. Since the bitrates are high, my conclusion is that the reason the PQ is less than outstanding is that this is the way the source material looks. On The Company, the bitrates are at about the same level as on SM3 but the PQ is much better, presumably because the source material was shot on HD digital cameras. I have no doubt that if SM3 had higher bitrates, it could look as good as Silver Surfer or Mr. Brooks.

So what do you think the problem is with Sony then? Do you think they can't produce the higher bit-rates or are they just happy with what they've got? I've said in some other threads that I wasn't too impressed by the PQ of the Spidey trilogy and a lot of people thought I was messed up in the head. I'll be the first to admit that my setup isn't the best, but I can tell when a disc looks a bit more underwhelming than other titles played on the very same setup. I'll have to agree with you that Sony needs to step up and put out the same quality PQ that Disney and FOX has been producing...I'm very happy with both of those studios.

I don't know what the problem is with Sony, but they need to wake up on the PQ front. Up until very recently, they were doing everything right in terms of PQ. Now they are not.
