I just don't think all people see it. I have friends that don't really see a difference between upscaled DVDs (and hi-def) or at least enough to make a switch to hi-def. A few of us have been trying to convince the wife of my one friends on that for a while but she just doesn't see the big deal. My parents are the same way. When they were visiting recently, I was showing them a SD TV show and HD TV show by just switching the inputs. So, it was the same show, just one looked much, much better. They didn't see the big deal and didn't think it was any better than their digital cable quality on a standard def (26") TV. The only real thing they noticed was that it was widescreen and they were impressed by the size of the screen. Nothing about how clear the picture was or how much detail you could see in the picture. Of course, since they're getting kind of old, maybe they couldn't see the picture all that well.

from my experience, i would say the majority of "normal" people don't notice a difference from my blu-rays to their dvd's until they've seen and heard a few blu-rays on my system, then went home and watched a dvd on their system.

then it becomes obvious. and until the majority of the country can tell a difference, hd isn't going to take off, other than in the form of new tv's. but even with that..i think a lot of those sales are to just have a slim "cool" looking tv, not picture quality.

soooo

My father and I both have older tv's. I have a 51" Hitachi ultravision RPTV and he has a 65" Hitachi Ultravision RPTV. I guess the difference isn't big enough to justify the cost to him.

thats another thing, if youre seeing blu-ray on a less than stellar tv, youre obviously not going to see the difference, and thus wont care and wont see the point in spending the money. i think thats a lot of the problem people have as well

I agree.

My girlfriends father has had a 42" and 50" plasma for almost 3 years. He doesnt even have an upconverting DVD player. I have a HD DVR from DirectTV so I gave him my HD antenna. That is the only HD item he has. But he definitely sees a difference, along with his wife.

I bought an Import of Starship Troopers from Australlia and compared it to my standard definition and I noticed the difference immediately. I seen the bit rate go as high as 40m/pixels. WOW!

I'm sure a plasma would blow our TV's out of the water but my tv and his are native 1080i, there is a huge difference between the 480p and 1080i I showed him.

well even on top of that. i would assume most people don't even use the best cables available. i know my parents just used rca's when they could have ran components. that'll make a huge difference as well.

True.

My Dad at least watches HD programming. My in-laws have two aquos LCD's and don't watch HD on either. They can't be bothered to go to those channels.

Well, then they have to look at the other side of their own selfish minded pseudo perceptions and see that there is also no DVD, nor HD-DVD that looks that great!

I know its possible that no matter what I won't convince them. Just want to get them off my back!!
this always works for me

You know what I just realized? I've had this happen to me with people making me "off ebay" offers. They play this game of, "Ho Hum. It's nice, but not that great. I'll take it off your hands for xx dollars."

I have choice words for a person like that and "shrewed" isn't it. I deal honestly with my ebay offerings and I expect honesty in return. In short, I didn't sell to that guy once I realized his game.

Some people are just information seekers. I worked at Radio Shack and this happened all the time. People pumping me for information while my fellow associates are ringing up cell phones and making spiffs, while I am trying to sell to a person with no intention of buying. I lost tons of sales like this.

If you blow them off, they will buy from your fellow associate and give you a smug look on the way out. Screw them, that was for show. It gets returned later - sometimes at a different store.

There comes a point of 5 or 10 minutes where you might need to say, "Listen, my time is valuable and I want to help you. Do you want to think about it some more?" I know, sounds like BAD customer service. But if you know this isn't really a customer, what have you lost? Never say this kind of thing when a person makes the gesture of grabbing their wallet. Start closing the sale.
