I love Sixth Sense but it's interesting how many think it takes a second viewing to appreciate it. I always wish I hadn't seen it the first time because
[Show spoiler]the great surprise at the end can never be recreated

To me the plot twist wasn't much of a surprise, it was hardly original when the film came out and I'd guessed it. A second viewing made me appreciate the film more though, in how well the end was set up and that the film didn't cheat.

"...in order to completely appreciate them?"

Any number of worthwhile movies that have complex plot-structures, or boast striking cinematography, or showcase great acting involving multi-dimensional characters. Often it's hard to appreciate the art that might go into early character development without knowing the whole picture as it later emerges.

Agree with "Cloud Atlas" and "Shutter Island" and some of the others mentioned, and would add "Tree of Life". But for simply understanding the plot-line the wonderful "A Very Long Engagement" has to rank as one of the most difficult to grasp in a single sitting.

I honestly don't think any film requires multiple viewings.

Of course in order to understand certain elements better in certain films, multiple viewings are beneficial, but not essential.

Cloud Atlas for sure! Never seen anything like it. Need to watch this twice to really understand.

Since the end went back and spelled out exactly how it was set up, it didn't require another viewing for me to appreciate it any more than the first time. great movie in any case

This movie(and few others) was interesting in that it can be viewed in two different way, even if one figures out in the middle.

The first time, the audience are watching it through kind of Bruce Willis's point of view of what is happening. Then when you are confirmed about the truth(even if you figured out in the middle), you are watching it from the beginning through the point of view of the little kid. And can also note all the scenes that doesn't cheat and works in both views. So not that you appreciate it more(which it can), but more that it can be viewed and feel differently the second time you watch. Well, that's how I saw it...

I understand what you mean. I own Sixth Sense and have enjoyed watching it several times. I was just pointing out that like any mystery movie, it's never as fun the second time around, for me anyway (similar to Shutter Island). That's opposed to some movies that I enjoy more and more every time I watch them. I get that it's definitely enjoyable to check out a movie like Sixth Sense numerous times.

This one works two ways. One because you see things that you may have missed from the first viewing. Also every time you watch the film you are always wondering who has been taken over by the Alien at what point in the film. It also requires multiple viewing because of how good the movie is.

Citizen Kane for me. I found it interesting the first time, if a little cold, but on subsequent viewings I was able to see past the hype and really get more of the movie itself. A favorite.
