Best method is to use a spray gun if you can.

Don't use any Rustoleum spray as it can smell a lot and won't result in a smooth finish.

Some of my work mentioned below:

Gravity Steelbook (UK) - Custom Glossed - Tricky one due to the plain back. Attracts dust particles suspended in the air but it almost gave a freckle like effect.

Kill Bill Steelbook UK - Custom Glossed. Didn't go overboard with the glossing as I thought the quality of the finishing on the Steelbook was above average.

28 Weeks Later - UK - Custom Glossed (again didn't go overboard as the original finishing quality was okay).

Pacific Rim Futureshop - Custom Glossed

Note: I have to admit that the finish is amongst the worst but after glossing it looks better (at least marginally) than the Amazon JP Steelbook. I am sure the Amazon JP Steelbook will look even better after glossing.

Thor Zavvi - Looks absolutely stunning after glossing.

As a slipcover vet no. Do not gloss your slips. That is all haha.
It would probably soak into the cardboard and more or less ruin it.
And them being as flimsy as they are, they would definitely crack. Faster then the SB's would.

Although I think this idea is interesting it seems like it would kill the steelbook value in case you ever want to resell or trade. Now I don't want to hear those you are collecting for the wrong reason people spout out their garbage on that because just because you like what you buy to keep its value doesn't mean you aren't collecting for enjoyment.

I personally don't plan to resell any Steelbooks, but I think selling/trading wise, I could see glossy upgrades having more demand than the original. For instance, I'd definitely be willing to pay more for that 28 Days Later upgrade that lgans posted.

Opening it kills the value too, are all yours shrinkwrapped?

I'm not talking about the general market, I'm talking about what some people may want more. I even pointed out an example that I'd personally pay more. Thus even just speaking on behalf of myself, there is at least some demand that exists already, and more so than the original value of the Steel. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would pay more given the option between a boring matte finish, and a custom glossed one..

I open all of my steelbooks as I don't see how the artwork can be enjoyed when it is covered in plastic and stickers, though I don't condemn the practice of keeping them sealed. I do keep them in plastic bags when they aren't displayed though. And I don't see opened mint steelbooks lose that much value when I see them sold. Plus, the money I save that prevents me from buying a second non-steelbook copy usually makes up the difference you would have lost from unsealed steels.

I always thought Steelbook collector's were picky, every time I see one of these home made clear jobs they look pretty rough, tons of dirt and junk in them. Also, the way it's being done will never hold up, they need to be taken apart first and the surface needs to be prepped correctly, just slapping clear over the metal and plastic all at once is a bad idea and a waste of $$$ IMO. I don't mean to offend anyone who has already done it, just warning those thinking about ruining a $50 Steelbook.....

I just picked my 2 favorite steels, I'm not trying to cherry pick the pics. I think they all look great. To say all the ones you've seen are rough and have tons of junk n them is hyperbole, plain and simple. But if you you want to be that guy, so be it.

Although I would never do that to my own steelbooks, that one is pretty impressive

Ok. Now THAT is pretty cool and I can see where adding a gloss makes sense in this case.

I would never gloss a steelbook just to gloss it. But, to add an appropriate effect such as this? I just might consider taking the plunge. Of course, that would involve having a steelbook that I would want to do something like this to. Peter Pan just ain't gonna be in my collection, so...
