I have this image of all these people in uniforms walking around buying things by mistake. It's a party in my brain ... and everyone's invited.

All the hot moms are wearing Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) uniforms.

my bad its a typo, but while we are on the subject, lets get all the MILFs blu hot short and tube top uniforms. it would seriously be the best advertising we could do. you see the blu-ray logo on some MILFs breasts. men think about sex every 6 seconds, it takes 10 seconds to walk through the electronics dept. at wal-mart, so odds are you think about breasts some time in the electronics section, thus you think about blu-ray, you see a blu-ray movie, you pick it up, we win!

I don't think this will really be a problem for 2 reasons:

1) Price as most people here have already mentioned. Most moms are pretty concious of the price on items and will notice that the price is very high on a blu-ray compared to the usual dvds they purchase.

2) DVDs and Blu-ray usually have different sections in most stores and the mom is most likely to head to the DVD section.

It's not impossible for this to happen, I just don't think it will happen a lot or become an issue.

I had a co-worker buy "300" on an HD-DVD combo disc. She was complaining about how it wouldn't play right. Only the DVD side would play. I finally asked her to bring in her player's manual to see if there was a setting that she missed. Turns out is wasn't even an HD-DVD player. She thought it was because she bought a new DVD player with HDMI!

1. yeah, but moms love their kids, if she knows her kid wants a movie and it comes up to be 5 dollars higher than she though, she isn't going to say hold on, im going to go look if there are cheaper ones, she is just going to pony up the extra 5. 2. while they do at BBY and CC, moms are most likely to buy their dvds from wal-mart while they are shopping. at my walmart there is an endcap for blu-ray and an endcap for new releases, then some get mixed in with each other. its not marked off well.

I would argue that HD DVD has much more business from uniformed ppl than blu-ray would too. simply because of the name. i don't think more than 15% of teh US population could explain the difference between upconversion and native hd.

yeah that's where the potential exists for that error to be made.... however, on those endcaps for new releases where the movies are mixed, MOST of the time the DVD version is sitting right next to the Blu-ray version... I have to think that most people would notice the 2 versions and at a minimum, the price difference.

And not all the packaging is that different (and I'm not talking about just moms. There are so many people who have no idea about this "war" let alone that HD stuff even exists). When I went to get CE3K at Best Buy it was NOT in the blu-ray section. I finally found it in the "bestseller" section and except that it was tinted blue, it looked just like the sDVD packaging (yes, there was a little blu-ray logo on it, but people would have to know to look for it and they're going to expect a collector's set to be expensive, so I doubt the price would raise a red flag ... er, a blu flag).

on the serious side... it will be interesting to see how many people get Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs for holiday gifts when the intent was just a DVD. Have you seen the shelves during the shopping season? Gawdaful disarray of cases strewn about....people picking through bins. You know a lot of mom's out there will doing the shopping-cart-hustle and be tossing the wrong discs into the basket.
