Yeah I think the HD-Dvd's were pretty bad. At least the warner ones, I had a few that stopped working I think.

not sure if my issue was rot or decay

but i noticed a lot of people have problmes with warner bros items.

i've had 3 of them from warner bros and one from something alliance

charmed the collector set of the book and either psi factor or earth final conflict had problems not with really rot or decay just bad packaging that resulted in many dvd's that was scratched and unplayable.

when recnetly doing some d2d i ran into two dvd's that would not read in any pc, laptop or standalone dvd player, both happen to be warner bros titles.

one was one of my first dvd's i bought, blast from the past, was not listed as warner bros but the company was either bought by warner bros or warner bros produced it for them. the dvd itself looks flawless.

the other was superman returns which was bought maybe 4 to 6 years ago, its a warner bros titel and it looks like it was just opened from the package.

good thing though about warner bros is they don't have problems with disc replacement.

on the charmed they replaced them never even asked for the originals back.

for these last two i just got a prepaid label in the mail to send them back for replacement.

I have a few dvd's with "decay" or "rot" or whatever you want to call it. I went through some of my collection and The Perfect Storm doesnt play at all and it looks brand new. Neither does my Superman 2 or 3 from my 4 film favorites collection. Well, they play but hang up in the same spots everytime. Also look brand new. Of course, a lot of my old Warner Hd-DVD have problems. Hopefully, this doesnt happen with blu-ray. So far, so good.

The defective discs that I have come across so far are from Universal (2), Anchor Bay (1), and DreamWorks (1).

What a sobering reminder of the incredible deflationary force technology has; $40 in 1999 is worth almost $80 today! A good reminder to invest wisely

With dvd it seems kind of random when it happens, whereas with LD and hd dvd you could at least get somewhat of an idea with a little research on which studios or pressing plants tended to be more faulty.

6 years late to reply, but....

I don't think HD-DVD was guaranteed to rot as such. It seems more like it is related to the plant where the problematic DVDs come from. A suspiciously high number of known bad HD-DVD discs are Warner titles, after all, even if you take into account that Warner were one of the few studios who supported the format.

Recently tried watching Tomorrow Never Dies on dvd & this problem occurred, have it on blu-ray now though.
What the heck... I just put in my copy of Tomorrow Never Dies and it doesn't work either. Goldeneye, Dr. No, and From Russia With Love all did.

My DVD set is this one.
The special features disc doesn't work either.

The hybrid layers on the same disc for dvd and hd dvd were pretty much a poorly executed disaster. I was glad to get rid of that collection. Unfortunately, I'm funding a lot more LD discs with rot than I was anticipating.

It's not Warners fault, it's the fault of Cinram's former Scranton plant. Any disc that's made in Mexico... well... y'know... any disc NOT MADE IN SCRANTON is void from these defects.

Huh ... TIL. The ultimate irony would be The Office DVD sets being manufactured there.
