This is a cool announcement.

But what's the deal with Sony releasing so many Godzilla blu-rays this year,and practically nothing else in the catalogue space? Aside from films they license out, it's basically nothing but a bunch of Godzilla double packs and Ghostbusters for the entire year. What made them all of a sudden go all-in with Godzilla, but nothing else? Just seems very strange to me...

I assume the 1st wave of Godzilla titles did fairly well for them to announce another batch. I just wonder if this will have any impact on them doing some more activity in the blu-ray world, or it's just a total fluke.

I don't believe in lower budget movies not being able to look like something that was made yesterday. Anything can be done with a little time/effort and care. I don't expect perfection but I don't think asking for movies on a blu ray disc to look like blu ray quality is asking for too much is it
At the end of the day Im getting these even if its another mixed bag because they all should have higher resolution if anything..

Again, those earlier films have different filmstock and were shot for Technicolor. Of course you'll be able to pull out a more vibrant and detailed image. Just compare how beautiful the earliest James Bond films look compared to the films made in the 80's, and 90's.

The reason is extremely simple. With the release of the new Godzilla film earlier this year and the coming blu ray release Sony are trying to capitalize any way they can off of it. Releasing these titles this year guarantees that Sony sees money from them whether it be fans of the movies that will buy them no matter what, people that see the new movie and get that nostalgic kick and will impulse buy, or people that viewed the new movie and want to check out some of the older titles Sony knows they will sell.

Im getting them anyway - these should be the complete versions of the Godzilla movies.. and to finally get Rebirth of Mothra III - too sweet !!

I assume the PQ and AQ will be more along the lines of the same, which doesn't bother me either really cause I love these films like you say. So, I expect they will all be great and Rebirth of Mothra III is an awesome plus!

My understanding is that (in general ) Sony was disappointed in Blu-ray sales for catalog titles so they were rather sub-license home video rights and keep their own focus on newer titles.

As for Godzilla, Sony wanted capitalize on the release of the new Warner Bros GODZILLA movie.

Years ago, a friend at SPHE described the Godzilla films as "evergreen" releases that don't sell huge numbers all at once, but sell steadily month after month, year after year. The May Blu-ray releases sold well enough for Sony to do their remaining Godzilla titles, and the company expects that these BDs to have a long market life.

BTW, did Sony lose the US home video rights to "Son of Godzilla?" Both the decade-plus old Sony US and Toho Japanese dvds feature a very nice quality print and it would be nice to see a US BD release.

Yep along with Hedorah, Sea Monster, Gigan, and Mechagodzilla. Since the former 3 were released by Kraken it is believed that they also have Son and Mecha.

That said, they are a night and day improvement over Toho's transfers. What more can you ask for?

I don't see much of a difference pro or con between most of the US Sony and Japanese BD releases of the 90's Godzilla films although I think the Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 US BD looks even more hazy and soft than the Japanese BD.

I believe Keith explained to me that another company has picked up the rights to Son of Godzilla and G vs. MechaG and there will be an announcement later this year.

Kraken did not get the rights to these films.

I'm looking forward to these, I've never even watched the mothra trilogy and GMK is by far the most interesting of the millennium movies to me. Here's hoping they fix the subtitles!

Godzilla 2000 will be mine! Watched this film on VHS as a kid. Been waiting for awhile to revisit it. I hope it looks better than the transfers from the first wave of Blu-rays. It'll be cool to check out the Japanese cut and see the additional footage.

Awesome news. I'm so glad the Mothra trilogy is finally getting a proper release. The Ghidorah designs in those movies are amazing.
