We should have a spy at universal... someone who can give us all the dirty... i mean.... filthy secrets.
J/K

But it would be great to hear about what they are thinking from inside.

I think it depends largely on what Warner and New Line do. If they go to Blu-ray exclusively, then I think Universal will start releasing on BDs too. But if they go to HD DVD, then I think Universal would probably stay where they are. If Universal is giving any thought to going neutral, I think they should consider that they might do much better making a deal before Warner and New Line announce any deal. Universal would probably be in a better position to negotiate with the Blu-ray side now, where if Warner and New Line do go to Blu-ray exclusively, Universal won't be able to demand much at all to start releasing on BDs.

I have it on the best of authorities that there is no Blu-ray version of American Gangster in production, nor has there ever been

For 1 Sec. It was a good feeling to read the words:

"American Gangster" and "Blu-ray" together

I don't know why people still think Universal is going neutral in the next 3-6 months.

I too have heard it just ain't gonna happen in early 08.

Hope.

But, frankly, if all we'd get is ported versions of Universal's 3.5 PQ efforts, what's the point?

I'm sure that's what we'll get, maybe we'll get lucky and they'll add lossless audio via PCM like WB has started to do for their BD releases. So, same video encodes...but hopefully upgraded audio.

But there's a flip side to this. If they do ports of the HD DVDs, then they should be able to have a steady flow of titles when they do move to neutrality and start releasing on Blu.

Anyone care to predict Universal's first slate of 4 BD "ports"? Surely, one of The Mummy movies, and probably one of The Fast and the Furious movies. LOL.

She also mentioned that there is very bad blood between Universal and Paramount, ever since in their eyes, Paramount stole DreamWorks from them. She feels there is no way that Universal and Paramount can work in unison as HD-DVD's only exclusive supporters.

Now with the rumors of Universal trying to lure DreamWorks/Spielberg back from Paramount, there is great animosity between the two companies.

I think we will see Universal producing Blu-ray discs quite soon, maybe in less than 90 days. A rumor I heard is that Universal's first Blu-ray release will be "American Gangster." We will see

This is good to know, but rumors get passed around the office too though.
So I'm not holding my breath.

With all the momentum behind blu and Speilberg's support behind blu there has to be more than a few in the camp who think Universal being HD DVD exclusive was a stupid move.

I dont want to lose Warner, and dont think we will... but how funny would it be if we did lose them and Universal jumped sides?

I suspect HD DVD would feel like that Snowman in the sno globe in the Pixar short.

I don't think Universal would jump sides completely when "the time comes". They'll go neutral first. When, I don't know. I suspect not in 2008 UNLESS Warner Bros. goes BD exclusive in the first half of the year.
