Mmmm nice. Musicals should always come with their CD soundtrack.
It's great that they're finally using original artwork. Never cared for the covers used for the old BD and DVD editions.

when Fox is all done and finished with releasing this - they should get back on the bus and fix the botched hidef bluray transfer of 'The King and I' --- unreal - how many times does it take til Fox does a R&H title just right?

Here's the artwork for the 2-Disc edition. It's currently $15.99 at Foxconnect, but you can get an additional 30% off if you sign up with them (see top left corner on main page). This brings it down to $11.19 shipped

They should make a limited collector's edition that comes with a replica of the original sword from The Sound of Music ...

I just bought The Sound of Music a year or so ago, and I love the Blu-ray. The thought of replacing it already sort of breaks my heart, but I'll do so if the new transfer has been significantly improved.

The Target exclusive appears to be just "collectible art packaging" (digibook, perhaps?) for the two-disc set, particularly given Target's $21.99 asking price versus $34.99 for the five-disc set. The cover art on the general release looks better to me, though.

It might have exclusive content and is just not labeled that way in the mock-up yet?
Hey I'd love a digibook for this release. That would be amazing!

I think Congress should enact some legislation that all film, on BD, that are 20+ years old HAVE to receive a digibook to "chronicle" the films history.

Yes, but you know something else will be off, since they never get this film right on video

I'm interested to see what kind of improvement there is. The current Blu-ray is utterly fantastic.

MY collectors edition came with a music box. What does this "ultimate" collectors edition have that mine doesn't?

Look at all the stuff the 45th one comes with.

I also own 45th Anniversary Limited Edition Collector's Set and this "Ultimate" 50th anniversary edition definetely underwhelms by comparison. If the 50th edition added 3D and new collector's items like The Wizard of Oz 75th Anniversary Collector's Edition, I would consider replacing my current copy.

The video and audio on the 45th edition are already stunning. Can't see it looking/sounding any better in this new version. But I will wait to read the reviews before making a final judgement. If the improvements are good enough, I may just replace the blu-ray case and discs with the new "Ulitimate" edition and keep all the collector's items and box from my 45th edition.

A new hour long documentary with Julie Andrew and Christopher Plummer
A new soundtrack CD with songs previously unavailable in the US

It needs to be in actual 4k! Won't they be releasing 4K discs soon?

The negatives were scanned at 8k, restoration done at 4k. The 45th anniversary Blu-ray is from that 4k restored master, presumably this 50th anniversary uses that restoration. Its possible but unlikely that Fox would rework that 4k restoration for the 50th anniversary. We'll all find out when it does get released.

Also, no studio has announced UHD Blu-ray Discs yet but I'm sure this will be one of Fox's firsts.

You'd think there would be a projected timeframe tho. 4k players are due out later this year!

Yep. I would think this one is likely to be an early 4k disc (same for the Goodfella's 4k remaster).

The players are "due" out, but no player has been officially revealed, let alone an actual release date. The first wave of releases will probably be announced pretty much at the same time as the players IMO. Some studios might take months or weeks after to get out their press releases. My guess is even if players make a 2015 launch, the titles available will be slim pickings until 2016.
