I don't know what that other person is saying, but the shootouts were amazing! The tunnel/container yard shootout had an amazing sound design. It had the same sound as the Heat shootout but echoing though a tunnel!
The end shootout at the parade was really intense, just like in Heat and Collateral, your hoping all the innocent bystanders get out of the way. I saw the movie last night and have no idea why this took such a bashing from the critics. I'm a Mann fan and did enjoy Miami Vice and Public Enemies, but Blackhat is clearly better than the those to films. Mann, as usual, references several elements and themes from basically all his previous films (except The Keep). i even recognized a certain line that was said in The Jericho Mile. Its really a cool, slow-burn, investigative procedural that constantly builds to the action. Its lacking in the overall character development, but there are lots of details about how Hathaway got to where he is in a restaurant scene pretty much like in Thief. The romance is to quick and tacked on I think, but that's the only fault I found with the film. Cinematography was much better that Public Enemies (I did like the look though) and Miami Vice (I like the look as well, but some of the lenses used in Vice where jarring). Much of the character scenes had a much more film-like look, while all of the city shots are pretty much just as lively as all my favorite shots from Collateral and Miami Vice. Beautiful looking movie. I also thought the whole third act was really cool: [Show spoiler] I wanna see it again before it leaves theaters to pick up all the little nuances. As usual, with Mann, there's actually a lot going on within a scene. Anyway, I can keep going on, but I gotta stop writing, I loved the movie. This is a day 1 pickup. Too bad no one went to see it. Maybe Mann's film should just be limited release films at art house theaters rather than the blockbuster factories. |

Miami Vice was NOT a failure at the box office. It made over $30 million over its budget. Why people keep saying it was a bomb I have no idea. It was not.

Miami Vice is probably still in the red, but like you said it did make a little over it's production budget. Can't imagine Blackhat will even come close to doing that (and it cost 70 million).

It's also the most underrated of all his films, one that gets better with time and each subsequent viewing.

Overseas, it made $100 million for a worldwide total of $163. Add reshoots and all the production problems it had because of shooting on location and donīt forget the marketing and distribution costs. And the studio only gets half of that amount. Ok, then you have DV, BD and TV rights, but as of today, Miami Vice might be still in the red... or just even. Well, I just checked the-numbers.com and Miami Vice got $37,7 millions from domestic video sales. Itīs likely to be still on the red. http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Mia...ab=video-sales http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=miamivice.htm And it still got a decent edition on Blu Ray. |

The standard for "failure" is making less in the theater than the official budget. Miami Vice is not a failure, even if you want to say it wasn't a success either. Once you factor in behind-the-scenes deals and home video I would guess it's been profitable for a while now.
Either way, semantics aside, it's not anywhere near a failure like Blackhat is so I don't see a point in comparing them. |

That is your standard, not the one that Hollywood has about what itīs a failure or not.
And regarding Blackhat, seems that it will be a big failure at the box office, but weīll have to wait until it closes worldwide to see how big is (rest assure, it is already a ver big failure in the USA and Canada). MY point is, given that IMHO Miami Vice bombed at the box office and it still got a decent BD edition, I expect the same for Blackhat. Besides, worst case scenario would be the lack of supplements, but I think that a solid picture and a good DTS-HD track are guaranteed. |

According to every standard I have ever read a "bomb" is a film that made less than its budget by a wide margin. Blackhat qualifies, Miami Vice does not. I don't really feel like debating semantics beyond that, honestly.
And I would guess the only special feature question depends on Mann's willingness and availability to do a commentary. The rest will be featurettes they probably made during production anyway, like almost every new release. |
