Of course the PS3 should be counted as a blu-ray player, since DUH it IS a blu-ray player

Blu-ray is a disc FORMAT. Whether 20%, or 50%, or 100% of PS3 owners use it to play MOVIES is really irrelevant. The PS3 has a blu-ray disc player, it can be used as a standalone blu-ray player, and many people obviously DO.

Not counting/counting a percentage of PS3's as blu-ray players is nothing but HD DVD fanboy FUD to try and discount it as what it is. Oh, but still they ARE counting an Xbox360 add-on, that ISN'T really a player, since it can't be used by itself, but is just a drive that can be plugged in to the Xbox360 to be used as a player. Which it's why it's an ADDON, not a PLAYER.

Im sure some people use the game controler to watch movies, BUT if you bought a remote control for the PS3, you aint playing games with the remote. Your watching movies. We cant get an exact %, but I think it would get us some where in the neighbor hood of how many PS3's are being used as players. I have no clue how many remotes have been sold.

Im sure people on both sides are simular. They dont have as many GOOD movies to choose from, but use their atach rate. Compare that to Blu disk sold and # of Blu players on the market. That should give us a @% of people that use the PS3 as a Blu-Ray movie player.

It plays Blu, it counts. End of discussion. I'm sick of this "well, a certain portion are only used to play games" BS. The fact is, if you have a PS3 and you know it plays Blu you'll be 100 times less likely to go RED. And that's really what matters.

When those gamers grow up and/or get an HD TV, they'll be checking this site out on a regular basis. Red is dead to these folks. It's Sony's job to make sure everyone who owns a PS3 knows what it can do. That's happening now. Count 'em all!

Yes it should. It plays Blu-rays ergo it's a Blu-ray player

Last I checked it was a Blu-ray player. Of course it should be counted. And the HD DVD add-on should be counted for them as well. At the end of the day, though, what difference does it really make? All the posturing is just a way for HD DVD to attempt to claim victory on some nonsense metric they had to fudge the numbers to get.

People need to start understanding that there is a reason why HD media/formats are referred to as next generation. Logically, one must expect that outdated stereotypes about what constitutes a player are no longer valid.

The future of HD media is in multifunctional players, the PS3 happens to be one.

Yes, it must be counted.

How about a who cares option on the poll?

IMO player sales numbers are pointless...

If HD-DVD has 300 million players in the home but were still selling 500 discs a week, it doesn't matter because the players are pointless without the discs.

Let the HD-DVD camp say what they want and spin what they want, because at the end of the day, they get their teeth kicked in every Friday. If they want to say BD attaches .00000001 discs per player than more power to them, because at the end of the day 70% of the HD market is still owned by BD.

I think ALL PS3s should count as players. Why use a percentage? A player sold is a player sold. If we are going to use a percentage, then we'd have to do the same for HD DVD. I would estimate only 20% of HD DVD players are used for movies, the rest are used for coasters or doorstops.

First off, attach rates are the most ridiculous thing ever created.

Second, if it plays blu-rays it must be called a blu-ray player. Those who disagree should seek trepanation to let some of the stupid out of their skulls .

Trepanation? Ouch.

I need an HD-DVD player like I need a hole in my head.

I say use the Nielsen numbers, which show about 30 - 35% of PS3 owners intend to use it as a Blu-ray player.

This means about 2 million PS3 owners, plus the 4 - 500k standalones, gives a 2.5 million - 750k advantage.

It's realistic, and shows player market share dominance.

look everyone. calm down a bit. i'm a huge bd and ps3 fan but you have to look past that. think about it from a business perspective. it is only a movie player if someone uses it to play the movies. but since it is a multi purpose machine it doesn't fit into one or the other perfectly.

how are dual format players counted? if they are counted as 1 for both then yes the ps3 should count as a player.

did the ps2 count as a dvd player? if so then the ps3 should count as a blu ray player.

but if not then no it doesn't. i'm sorry. survey says

The way I look at it is this: CE Manufacturers are mostly interested in Number of units sold, Studios measure their success by the number of discs sold, Attach Rates mostly come into play when HD Zealots comment of the format war.

Given the above assumptions are accurate, the answer is a resounding Yes, we need to include the PS3s in the total numbers because they are Blu-ray players indeed.

Smile I didn't think so at first but....

I changed my mind when I started reading that a lot of people are watching movies on PS3. I even read an article a few months ago that said that possibly as much as 20 percent of all PS3's out there are primarily or only for movie watching. It indicated that a lot of people bought the PS3 for the sole purpose of watching Blu-ray movies because it was a lot cheaper than buying a regular Blu-ray player.

You might find this interesting. At a local Sam's Club I go to, Sony has set up and PS3 display that pretty much ONLY touts it as a Blu-ray player. It is hooked up to a 40" Bravia LCD playing various movies (Spider Man 3 today). The entire display makes no real mention that it's a gaming console except from one small note down in the lower right corner where it says, in not so bold print, "You can also play games."

That's it, nothing else but Blu-ray. They set this display up and Sony reps were there to answer questions during the first week of November (trying to get the holiday rush I'm sure). I asked them about the fact that it hardly mentions that it's a game system as well, and they said that they were trying to promote it to be as much a movie system as a games system. They tried to sell it to me until I told them I already own the BDP-S1, at which point they said, EXCELLENT!!!!"

The display is still there and regularly they have either a Sony rep or a dedicated Sam's club rep there to answer questions. I asked the Sam's club rep that was there today how it was selling and they said that they been selling like "gang busters."
