YES. Bring on the genre stuff from the golden age of the B's! I've got it all on DVD / laserdisc. I'm gradually but happily upgrading to BD. Day one for me. There are so many more titles we need: The Thing from Another World, Them!, This Island Earth, etc. Even "minor" titles like Magnetic Monster would make me giddy with joy.

I agree this isn't anywhere near as good a movie as Alien, but still, without It! The Terror from Beyond Space there wouldn't be any Alien, so I respect it for that. Not completely without entertainment value, and it's cool to see it coming to Blu-ray.

To say "It" is better than Alien is rather contrarian and suggests you just have something against Alien. That said, it's a very well-done monster movie and I think it manages to build a lot of tension and suspense as the crew gets pushed further and further into the ship as the monster smashes through all the doors. It's probably one of the scariest 50s movies, not that that's saying a whole lot by our desensitized standards today. The suit is awful, but the movie is good enough that it doesn't really matter, since much of the movie is generating suspense through the idea of the monster instead of trying to scare you by showing it.

Fun story about this movie: The monster suit was built by a guy named Paul Blaisdell who played monsters in a number of low budget films. He was a small guy and made the suit to fit himself. However he didn’t get the job, and the much larger Ray Corrigan did. When Ray put on the head it was too small and his chin was where the mouth should be so the mouth stuck out. The budget didn’t allow for a new head, so Paul painted the area where his chin was to look like a tongue and added a new lower jaw beneath it. When you see the film notice that the monster’s mouth is always open and is tongue is showing. That’s why!

This movie packs a huge amount of entertainment value into a short period of time. There are movies that are just endless fun too watch whether not they meet the requirments of "good". Honestly, I know CITIZEN KANE is a great movie but I don't know if I could sit through it again...I already know the identity of Rosebud ![]() The serious drama of ALIEN has worn thin on me over the years. Maybe the intensity has worn me down but it no longer generates much emotional response on my part. I can watch BEACH BLANKET BINGO once a month but I can only watch BEN HUR about once every three years. Sometimes the "fun factor" just outweighs high falutin' production values ![]() |

I find Alien very, very rewatchable purely for the visual style of it, it's one of my favorite movies as far as the look of everything goes. "It!" is probably more fun, yes. I have to rewatch it sometime, I have only seen it once or twice and it's been many years. I got that double feature disc for Monster that Challenged the World (I'd taped that off TV as a little kid and had seen it many, many times) and never really gave "It!" the attention it deserved. I mainly just remember being impressed by how suspenseful it was compared to all the other rubbery 50s monster movies. Compare the way it uses the critter compared to something with a similarly crappy monster like "Monster of Piedras Blancas" and the director comes off as some kind of genius! |
