How so? As far as I know, it looks better than the Bandai DVDs and that's honestly all I need.

Me too, like its a selling point
Surely an upscaled DVD would look better?

The convenience is the main argument, but the image quality would be very slightly better as well, if they are encoded in AVC over MPEG2 with the same bit rates and that wouldn't hurt either.
If they bothered to use a good source, do upsampling themselves, and present it across several discs it could theoretically look better than the DVD. However, if they use low-grade footage from poor old masters, do not extra work, no new encoding, etc. and just paste them over to a Blu-ray (as this release seems to be) it will definitely suffer. Quality will be worse than the DVD's. Sure, you gain some convenience by having it on one disc. But other than that, how is this an improvement?

I bet they don't even lower the price to adjust for the quality difference. It's probably going to be even more expensive than the DVD set. If they released this with a $10 price point as opposed to the $35 or so of the DVD set, then maybe some point could be made regarding price reduction. However, it will probably be an even more expensive one-disc Blu-ray release with inferior quality. There's not a good reason for SD Blu-ray's and this concept will surely not go over well.

For the record, there's 54.2 GB of data total on the 8-disc DVD set, some of which is repeated menus. So the video will probably be (slightly) more compressed as well.

This comes out next month (1-16-16), is anyone planning on grabbing it? I soooo wanna support the SD on BD movement in hopes that a studio like Mill Creek will release some of there shows on BD in more condensed packages. My only complaint right now is that Amazon has it for full retail of $34.95 and I was hoping for closer to a $20 price point. Has it been confirmed that this is a single disc release?

never heard of this but I like the idea of putting sd tv on 1 blu ray disk for cheap.
wish they would put like classic talk shows (carson, conan O brien in SD like this)
Thy could put dozens of SD hours on 1 Blu disk

Hell Yeah!
I didn't particularly care for this show, but things that will NEVER see a proper release on DVD, should get done this way!
I'd kill for all of Exo-Squad done this way!
That way, I can watch the entire thing... Though, they'd need to put it on at least two disks.
Season 1 on one disk, season 2/3 on the other.

I plan on picking it up but I agree with your hope that the price will drop.

I've been trying to support Discotek Media as much as possible; they seem to one of the only studios interested in putting classic and/or obscure anime titles on Blu-ray.

SD content for $35? No thanks. I'm not surprised this show is getting this poor treatment though, Tatsunoko seems to hate SPC because it performed very poorly in Japan back in the day.

i support SD to BD because i've been doing that since 2010 with all of my 8mm, vhs, vhs-c, and betamax tapes i have laying around.

what i have found is at FULL MAX (9 mbps) dvd spec quality video, i can get about 10.5 - 11 hours of SD footage on a bd50. i have my blu-ray player going through an hdmi receiver, so i assume that is doing the upscale...

but what is this about bd players not upscaling sd on bd? i have never heard of this.

i have alwasy wanted more sd - bd done... but if thats the case, i dont know if i am as adamant about it now...

I just like how the box advertises it as Standard Definition..

It'll be an interesting release, if it isn't too bad I might pick up.

Samurai Pizza Cats is a hilarious show from what I've seen, with a surprisingly very funny dub. Underrated and ahead of it's time for sure. I'll just get the DVD set though. I'll keep SD content to DVD and HD to Blu-ray. Even my Blu-rays with horrible transfers like Carrie are still in HD.

At least they are being upfront about it. Not trying to trick customers which other companies might do.

Never heard of the show but after looking it up, seems like something id enjoy. I may buy it. Being in SD doesn't bother me at all, I still buy DVDs after all & im not picky about PQ.

It's 19.99 on amazon now. I think I might bite.

If the series is not gonna receive a proper restoration (and let's face it, this is no Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop), I guess this is better than nothing.

Would've love to see the awesome latin american dub there, though.

They have the entire series on youtube, I watched a few and really enjoyed it. It's a blatant riff on the Ninja Turtles (they even namedrop them in episode 1 and the word Cowabunga) but it's pretty funny and the animation is great.

Samurai Pizza Cats is $19.99 at Discotek's site, and is tax free and free shipping. I bought it a few days ago and despite the release date of the 19th, they already shipped it out and it's set to arrive Friday.

Discotek, do extra work, surely you jest. If it doesn't already exist, Discotek doesn't add it. As far as I know, they've never put in any effort for any of their releases. If a release comes loaded with extras, it's only because those extras existed elsewhere prior.
