Yikes! I mean, this was a nice surprise, but all 52 eps in SD and on ONE disc? Discotek, I think you need to rethink this release and try again.

well, i see the dvd box is 8 discs.
So, if they're single layered, 8x4,5=36GB which fit in a 50GB Bluray disc.

I understand the need to free up shelf space and lower production cost, but I don't feel right about this. Do most Blu-ray players even upscale SD content on a BD? If they don't, I can't help but wonder if the DVDs will look better when upscaled. Curious if they'll pre-upscale the video.

Blu-ray players don't upscale SD content (on a Blu-ray disc). This will be an epic fail of a release. Sorry, Discotek. This is not a good idea. Release SD shows on DVD. The DVD's will upscale and look superior.

I hope this doesn't also hint at their plans for future Blu-ray releases as at one point they expressed the idea of releasing whole HD seasons of a series on one disc. Talk about bad compression.

If they pre-upscaled the video it would take up way more space to be effective. There's no way this was done... or if it was, the job would be pretty bad anyway. Over 50 episodes on one disc?

The biggest benefit of the disc is simply having it all on one disc... but how many people actually would want to marathon binge-watch over 50 episodes of Samurai Pizza Cats in a row?

I would.

I just binged on Fast & Furious the other day, all* the movies in one day; including the two shorts, and in correct timeline order.

*Except for 7, which isn't on Blu yet

It would be especially crazy if they forgot to implement a resume feature.

I just don't get why they're doing this; they asked for opinions on it like a year ago and I said the idea was terrible, but I guess they got enough positive support to warrant doing it.

Since BD players don't upscale SD content on a BD (though aren't there separate upscalers that do?), this is going to be quite ridiculous when the DVDs through my PS3 look better.

As long as you don't stop in the middle of an episode, it doesn't really matter. If I finished episode 10, on my next viewing I'll jump to episode 11. You don't need a resume feature.

You can always buy a pre-sunset BD player and run it 480i.

Hardly the first 480i content on BD.

Or you could get the existing DVD set, probably for cheaper.

As an owner of it I would like to point out not only is the series not HD, "480i" is a stretch. It's clearly sourced from low-resolution videotape masters. There are visible tracking errors in many episodes. I love the show but this would be a real contender for worst-looking Blu-ray release ever.

Nope, some Eagle Rock's will have it beat...

I think the Bee Gees 1997 is the worst....

But 480i-ish on BD shouldn't be rated as a "normal BD" anyway...cause it isn't.

Sure, if you remember which episode you left off at and don't mind watching studio logos every time you wanna watch an episode or two. Resume is a necessary feature for me with series.

SPC certainly already looks like balls on DVD, being from Saban's analog video masters. The Japanese-language DVD set looks much better, being from a film source.

At least they're honest, they deserve a big plus for that. Unlike some others that might've left it off the cover and got some cheap sales on people who bought it thinking that it just might be HD.

Some heads need to roll for that. I still haven't entirely gotten over it, to be honest.

Or you could jot it down and keep it in the amaray case, like I always do.
It's as if you never bought a TV series on Blu-ray or DVD before?

I like the idea. I wish Mill Creek would do this with a bunch of those 50 disc complete series they release on DVD. They could put the whole series of a show like Roseanne in SD on like 8 disc and I would buy it if the price was around $20-$30.

I never heard or seen Samurai Pizza Cats however if the price is right I will buy it to support SD on Blu-ray in an economical package

It would be so much more convenient to have older shows that were recorded in SD like I assume Rosanne was put on significantly fewer discs than their DVD release counterparts. I would love to see Married with Children spread out over 5-6 blu ray discs that could all fit in a slightly thicker amaray case, as opposed to the current 32 disc DVD beast of a set.

The convenience is the main argument, but the image quality would be very slightly better as well, if they are encoded in AVC over MPEG2 with the same bit rates and that wouldn't hurt either.
