There are no guarantees, especially in the wake of SC's 4K scan based release of Purple Noon faring worse than Criterion's 2K scan based encode on account of overzealous digital noise reduction. If in doubt, wait for the reviews.

And Peeping Tom, despite what some might say. However, it seemed to me that SC succeeds more than they fail, so fingers crossed. It'd be a shame for their sales if they were to do a crappy 4K resto. This type of re-releases only succeeds if you provide lots of additional contents (not the case here) or a clear upgrade.

I'm hard of hearing, so that I do need help with subtitles.
Studiocanal's editions of The Third Man are notorious for not being subtitled, so I can't listen to them. However, the blurb on this site says that the limited collector's edition has subtitles for the hard of hearing (me!! There is a God!!!) The trouble is that Amazon and all other sites don't say this. So where did this site get their information and more importantly is that information about subtitles correct?? Accurate information on this would be so appreciated! |

UK Studio Canal releases often includes HoH subtitles, but indeed, there's no way to be sure before people having the disc stating what it contains very factually.
Unfortunately, concerning HoH subs, one can never be sure priorhand. On a more personal side, even if I'm not hard of hearing myself, I do believe it's a shame nothing can be done to systematically provide some. It can be perceived as a form of cultural exclusion and I can't even imagine how many movies are out of reach of hard of hearing people because of the lack of HoH subs. |

I want to remind that not only them are benefited by inclusion of English sutitles but people whose English is not a native language too! (like me). There's a ton of (english speaking) Blurays I want to buy, but I don't because they don't have English subtitles. Although i understand English as you can see, and I can write, I find it easier to read a subtitle than trying to catch by ear 100% of the dialogue (especially for FX-heavy movies). Plus if I have to see a movie without subtitles, I would have to have the volume waaay up to hear clearly, so it prevents me from watching a movie eg. after midnight if I want.. |

What frustrates me is the smaller studio releases and particularly looking at Network as they only tend to include subtitles when contractually required to, such as when they licence BBC titles. It is annoying as their releases of old TV and film will appeal to an older demographic for whom subtitles are a great help. The issue is Network say it is too expensive to subtitle especially when doing multi disk TV shows. That is a bit naughty as for the more recent shows subtitle files already exist for broadcast TV so they could take those and synch to the video files on DVD. |

I'm French myself, and while I have a level of English good enough to allow me not to need 100% of the time Eng subs, I like to have the secure option to rely on them if needed (being tired, or facing a movie with thick accents for instance).
But I do believe that there is something morally unacceptable towards HoH people. I can understand UK releases not being practical for non-English customers. I mean, they're not meant for us in the first place ! But I can't understand UK own citizens being left aside from accessing these movies because of the lack of HoH subs. |

I already sold the extras-free SC disc to get this. I'm sure this will be better than the last one (which already looked pretty good...the sound might need a bit of fixing though).
SC's recent restorations have been superb from what I've heard, and they don't seem to shut up about this one on their Facebook/Twitter pages so it must be a particularly special restoration. At least, I hope it is - it's one of those films that really deserves it! |
