Showing at Cannes, so I guess we'll hear about it. The previous transfer wasn't particularly bad, so this can only be an improvement.
By the way, probably too late now but there wasn't much need for a thread - this has already been discussed in a few threads already, and specifically in the StudioCanal Vintage Classics thread. |

If you're interested in the soundtrack, and the better packaging, it's not a bad amount extra to pay at all, it's only about $6 US more. If you're only interested in the BD, then sure the standard is the way to go.

Is it just me or is it weird to hear people complain about a 4-disc edition of a great film? Especially when there's a cheaper 1-disc edition also available.

Now it means 1 Disc + 2 wastes of space + 1 CD. |

You'd also not get a 4 disc set for 20 notes in the "heyday" either. Did some people really think they were getting 3 extra BD discs for a couple of extra quid?

If this was the 'heyday' of DVD, it would just be 3-disc: 2 DVD discs + 1 CD. The extra DVD disc would only be there because all the extras wouldn't fit on the first DVD - with Blu-ray, they can easily fit on one disc. These are essentially the same extras as the previous release of The Third Man, with one or two new ones. If you really hate it that much, just get the 1-disc and don't complain! It's ironic that what you're complaining about is the DVD discs, despite reminiscing about the 'heyday of DVD'. Essentially, just ignore the DVD discs and judge whether you'd pay an extra Ł4.25 for the soundtrack, poster, postcards and booklet (assuming the regular edition doesn't come with all of those). |

- 1 BD for the movie with maxed out specs - 1 BD of extras including newly commissionned ones - 1 DVD for the movie only, because I'm buying a BD release so I certainly don't need the extras on both formats - 1 CD for the OST You see the difference ? 1 useless DVD (which should really only remain in the 2-DVD release) is turned into a disc dedicated for extras. The market view on this is well explained : the 1st disc is the movie on DVD, the 2nd one the extras on DVD, with the BD only being the 3rd disc ! My issue with this is it's obvious the DVDs are here to scream a nice "4 DISCS COLLECTOR RELEASE" on the cover while actually, only 2 are useful for this new 4K releases. Because let's face it, except to put this and have higher selling prices, who want to double dip at Ł19 a pop to get a new 4K restoration on DVD ? ![]() |

This is just what StudioCanal do these days. I notice their upcoming release of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya has changed from their usual Dual Format and regular for Ghibli titles, to two editions - one with just the Blu-ray disc, and one Dual Format. Why anyone would buy the latter is anyone's guess...unless the packaging is different (as some of them have been custom packaging in the past).
To be honest though, Dual Format is what Arrow, Eureka and the BFI have done with most of their Blu-ray titles, so there's not much to complain about here...other than price. But I'd certainly pay an extra four quid for an optional soundtrack CD/poster/postcards/booklet for any of their titles, so I don't see how it's any different here really (though you're right about maxing out the film transfer and putting it on an extra BD, but a 50GB disc should be absolutely fine to hold everything in the best quality...I don't know any distributor that would do what you're suggesting, BD's do cost more to produce than DVD's). PS: it doesn't 'scream a nice "4 DISCS COLLECTOR RELEASE" on the cover', it simply just says '4 Disc Set'... |

Bigshot, I'm 99% sure the CD won't be OST, as I don't think that's ever existed.
My grandma had an old vinyl release from the time of release and it was a re-recording. For me, I have no interest whatsoever in any re-recording. If it is the OST, I'd be tempted. If anyone can confirm either way... Steve W |

The Third Man Blu-ray Releases Detailed
Posted May 8, 2015 04:48 PM by Webmaster Studio CanalStudioCanal has detailed its upcoming Blu-ray releases of the new 4K restoration of Carol Reed's The Third Man, starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard, and Bernard Lee. Street date is July 20. Restoration details: Intermediate film print, 2nd generation of nitrate film (non-existent original negative), scanned in 4K and restored frame by frame in 4K by Deluxe in England. Restoration supervised by StudioCanal. Synopsis: Classic thriller written by Graham Greene and starring Orson Welles in which a writer sets about investigating the death of a friend in post-World War II Vienna. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), a pulp Western writer, arrives in the Austrian capital expecting to take up a job with his old acquaintance, Harry Lime (Welles). When he is informed that Lime died a week previously in a car accident, Martins is intrigued by inconsistencies in the accounts of the death and decides that he can't leave the city without investigating matters further. As a consequence, he finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue and searching for the elusive 'third man' who was at the scene of Lime's death. When the head of the local military police, Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), informs him that Lime was involved in black market drug distribution, the plot thickens even further...
