The only machines Sega's likely to be patenting are arcade boards. They're done with the game system thing; software's their stong point.

I always liked Sega. I would prefer that to 360/MSFT

I will never get rid of my dreamcast, I love that system and I also have been playing Virtua Tennis Y2K which I consider it to be the best Tennis game ever created. I was so happy when Virtua Tennis 3 was announced for the ps3 that is until I played it... .....first no online play and not to mention the worst control in history of tennis video game.

Sega...STAY WHERE YOU ARE! We don't need another platform out there for the consumer to debate upon which one he/she will chose! The only reason I have 360 and PS2 is because one is my blu ray player and the other is my game console...it took me awhile to pick BR over HD DVD, just because there were two and didn't wanna chose the wrong one. Sega, keep making games and stay out of the console wars..PLEASE

i'd prefer they joined actually. the more competition the better. altho, i don't think the industry could support 4 consoles.

Sega used to license out their previous gen consoles to another manufacturer (Genesis 3, there was even a Saturn clone). Perhaps this is a similar deal

Did you know that SEGA had to change their cracknel Logo from Orange into Blue here in Europe ?

...That wasn´t some stuff to show "Ohhh NTSC / PAL"

someone complained about the Logo, and Sega was forced to change it...

USA

...

Europe

( but they left the Power LED normal orange... )

Even the game cases looks different here...
They are also thicker...

Europe

...
USA

Yeah, I have the Euro Shenmue 2 release, great Japanese acting instead of the awful dub on the US Xbox version (despite the fact they could have fit both tracks on there)

The cases were thicker to accomodate the multiple manuals for multiple languages

The dreamcast was by far the worst system ever released, no thanks to them ever thinking about rejoining the console market!

Actually check that, the sega cd was the worst system ever released, the dreamcast is #2 on that list imo.

I've always liked Sega, but they should be honest with themselves.

They've never 'won' a console war, ever. Nintendo dominated the Master System. Super Nes Dominated the Genesis. PSone dominated the Dreamcast. They didn't have much luck in the portable realm either.

Other players 'tried' to get in on the action during these wars, such as Neo Geo, Turbo Graphix 16, and Atari.. but failed to reach a critical mass. Xbox essentially strong armed it's way into the public view, but that is due to Microsoft's seemingly unlimited bankroll. Not to mention it took one full generation to get in on the action. They can afford to take a loss, but not game only companies.

Sega can come up with great systems (the dream cast was way ahead of it's time, and so was the Sega CD), but they've never been able to market it correctly to developers and consumers. A lot of that has to do with software, as they've never been good in getting 3rd party support.

Also, I'm in agreement with a lot of people here. There simply is not enough room for another console. Currently you have 2 top contenders for High Def content, and that is the 360/PS3. The Wii squeaked in as 3rd system because it's unique, and also has familiar 1st party games such as Mario and Zelda not available on other systems. However the Wii is not next gen, it stands on it's own. It's a great system for party games, but it loses it's novelty quickly if you use it as a main system. As many Japanese CEOs have said, the Wii is a complimentary system -- not a main system.

They should really be focusing on Software, and continue releasing games that are high quality (the recent Sonic's not withstanding).

Nintendo dominated the Master System
Because Nintendo engaged in illegal restraint of trade actions, threatening retailers who engaged in Sega promotions with cutting off their supply (already choked by Nintendo's artificial capacity issues)

Oh yes, that and the illegal practices of denying 3rd party support to anyone who didn't release games exclusively on their system. After all those games had the Nintendo seal of approval for a reason. Sure you could develop games for the NES, but without that seal of approval (basically a drm chip that allowed it to work with the NES) they never saw the light of day until reverse engineering later.

I don't think that changed until companies tried to go around Nintendo and release games without their involvement, which resulted in some pretty hefty lawsuits from Nintendo if i remember correctly. I also remember Nintendo stating that your system could become a smoldering pile of goo if you used those games, because the carts weren't tested (when in actuality, it was reversed engineered drm chips that worked just as well).

Nintendo was no angel, thats for sure. However, they won and did dominate the Master System.

Yes, they were punished by having to issue $5 coupons to everyone, only good for new nintendo games oh the pain

Actually, the system used to defeat the DRM chip on non-Tengen games (which contained an illegal copy of the chip from the patent obtained through a bogus subpoena) COULD fry your system. It contained a small capacitor that released a charge and would send the DRM chip for a loop that more times than not would allow the start routine to begin. Of course as with shocking anything, you can blow it

I was trying to remember the name of that company, and you're dead on with Tengen. That brings back memories.

I never heard about the DRM shorting with other companies. I always assumed they had a fake implementation of the drm chip like Tengen. Interesting way of getting around DRM. That would explain why some non assured games would become scrambled sometimes during startup.

Sadly, I never got my coupon.

It was Color Dreams and a few others that had the non-licensed shocker games

Not even close. The 32x was worse than all of those... but I guess it wasn't technically it's own system. I can think of a lot of systems that were worse than the Dreamcast though, like these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbografx_16
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo_%28console%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Jaguar

There are many more too...
