Well, Japanese is the original language and I believe this may be a new master (notice that it will be screened outside the Studio Ghibli series). Also, GKIDS' new dub is still being worked on (reportedly Daisy Ridley and Dev Patel will star) so it will likely be saved for the Blu-ray (likely to come out with Cinedigm rather than Universal) and repertory screenings (GKIDS makes a killing on special screenings for Studio Ghibli titles).

I stand corrected. The whole cast must not have been announced yet (there's usually a press release).

Reports from the Japanese Ghibli thread are it is only being shown English dub only.

It's a stretch, but it might be because Disney doesn't allowing smoking in their movies.

all post-2010 Ghibli films (save The Wind Rises, which was released under their Touchstone label and not the Disney label) have been released by GKids, not Disney. Much of this has to do with Disney's Ghibli contract expiring I believe, but it also may be because they just don't care enough to license the newer Ghibli films. TBH I think the recent GKids releases (Poppy Hill, Kaguya, Marnie) have been better-handled than the Disney ones.

Obviously Only Yesterday is much older, but it's possible that it was never licensed in Disney's original Ghibli deal.

It was. Disney licensed them all in a package except for Ocean Waves.

Man it's weird hearing this film with an English dub after so many years of watching of watching it in Japanese. Which I'll probably continue to do myself...

So excited for this. Though I don't care for the casting of "flavor the month" voices for the English dub, but whatever, just excited this will finally be coming to theaters and to blu-ray.

Pleased that this is getting the attention it deserves. I often see it described as "Ghibli's secret masterpiece," something I don't disagree with. It's the one that I connect with on the most personal level. The credit sequence destroys me every time.

I've never seen this before, but I am immensely excited to finally own it. It's the only Studio Ghibli film I have yet to see (besides When Marnie Was There).

If I remember correctly, Disney didn't release it because of a brief scene concerning menstruation or something along those lines. Of course, they did release Pom Poko with all of their balls showing, so who knows?

[Show spoiler]

I think it's because Disney didn't think there was much of a market for this film. They had to renew their contract with Ghibli around 2010, and they kept the home video rights to all the films they released already (plus Mononoke), so maybe Only Yesterday stayed back with Ghibli, allowing GKIDS to get it. GKIDS also got the theatrical rights to the entire catalog, sans The Wind Rises. As for the new films, according to GKIDS' interview with ANNCast, they had to outbid Disney to get Poppy Hill, Kaguya, and Marnie. Disney did get The Wind Rises, but released it under the Touchstone label. It's weird how The Secret World of Arrietty has become the last new Ghibli film released under the Disney brand. O.o

But Disney has never had Ocean Waves or Grave of the Fireflies. Hopefully GKIDS or someone will finally release the former.

Found this old article where Disney explained why they didn't release Only Yesterday.

Quote:
October 24, 2005 "Totoro" English Screening Report
----
The dub was fine, although I prefer the female actresses in the Fox dub, since Dakota Fanning and her sister Elle's voices can be a tad grating on the ears. The dub producers noted that adults are usually cast for children's voices in most anime dubs, but they felt that they needed a pair of young sisters to convey the feeling of the characters, and they considered Dakota and Elle to be perfect for the parts. (Some of the child actors-including one from the Yamadas-were in attendance, and they seemed surprisingly professional for their ages.) It took about 4-5 months for the English dub to be finished, but the producers hadn't seen this version until that very night. Ghibli prefers as little added to the material as possible, so sometimes, the lines have to be stretched out to be able to get the same syallabic value in the English versions. Other than that, nothing gets changed in translation. Miyazaki generally avoids dubs of his films, but went to see the dub for Howl, because apparently Lauren Bacal is a celebrity in Japan, and he seemed to hit it off with her when they met in the dubbing studio. American celebrities are eager to do voice acting for Ghibli films. Christian Bale was supposedly so motivated to do Howl that he made time during his wife's pregnancy to contribute his lines for the film.

Someone asked about theatrical plans for Totoro, but there are none, other than this rare screening.(It's a shame, too, because it's probably the best preserved print of an older Miyazaki film I've ever seen. The Cagliostro sub Manga occasionally screens in L.A. is grainy and flickers, while the Laputa sub Disney played at AFI doesn't have the luster of Totoro.) I brought up the rumour about Nausicaa getting a theatrical re-release, and was told that it would be cheaper to release it on home video than distribute it on the big screen, so they scrapped the idea. I also asked about the videotaped Takahata Q+A session from 2004, and why it wasn't on dvd as mentioned, and the producers had no clue about it. Speaking of Takahata, Only Yesterday has been "shelved" indefinitely, because it has more adult appeal than the rest of the Ghibli library. When it is released on dvd, it might be available in a sub-only format. Someone else asked about I Can Hear the Ocean, and was told it's up to Ghibli if they want Disney to give it a domestic release. Another person asked about the Ghibli Museum Totoro sequel, and was told it was a museum exclusive. I inquired about the possibility of On Your Mark getting a domestic release, and was told that the company was considering putting out a Ghibli shorts dvd. At the moment, the producers appear to be working on Ghiblies, but they'd look into On Your Mark.
