The accent is going to be jarring when I see this, but he does seem to be doing it well. It looks pretty interesting, though the whole trailer just felt very very bleak. Based on the timing they're probably trying to position this as an Oscar contender, and who knows, I could see Smith nominated for it.

Pretty good. Smith is excellent, as are Albert Brooks and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. It could use some nip and tucking though...It could have been a much leaner film. Still though, a very interesting and emotional story, and I enjoyed it very much.

This may be a braver feat of cinematic journalism than Spotlight. Put another way: is it easier to criticize the Catholic Church or the National Football League in the United States today? In what may be his most interesting performance to date, Will Smith plays Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian pathologist employed by the Pittsburgh coroner. He is perplexed by the mental deterioration and death of a beloved former NFL center who, post-retirement, became estranged from his family, poorly repaired his rotting teeth with superglue, and used a Taser as a pain reliever. Despite obvious mental illness, there is no visible damage to his brain. Subsequent study, however, reveals the constrictive and degenerative buildup of protein. Dr. Omalu terms the disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and posits the ailment, the symptoms of which include hallucinations, memory loss, and impulse-control problems, is caused by frequent head trauma. Rather than embrace and reflect upon his discovery, the NFL responds with denial and intimidation.
An earnest and deadly serious whistle-blowing drama, Concussion is not immune to treacle and could benefit from a more consistent and propulsive pace, but it exhibits surprising and welcome courage in portraying the NFL as a cold and conspiratorial corporation not operating in the best interest of the beaten, bruised, sweat-drenched men it all but promotes as gods. The film raises its eyebrow in general at the religious exaltation of this gladiatorial sport which has become so deeply woven into American culture. And it refuses too simple or soothing an answer. The protagonist finds a degree of recognition and praise, yes, but as the camera surveys a field of teenage athletes preparing to smash one another in pursuit of "glory," the truth is unavoidable: the hits are here to stay. Probably Will Smith's best performance to date. The accent was a little difficult to get used to. Nonetheless, Smith was captivating to watch.
David Morse was unrecognizable in his role as Mike Webster. He should get a lot of praise for his work, but I doubt he'll get the attention he deserves. The deterioration was tragic and sad to watch. This was the first time in a while I wasn't bothered by Alec Baldwin in a movie. He did a pretty good job here. The entire movie was a bit uneven, but still good. Having to face down the behemoth NFL is no small matter. Concussions are basically closed brain trauma and having worked in neurosurgery years ago I can tell you they have a cumulative effect. This was handled very well by the filmmakers and Will Smith. It's a risky movie, IMO, and I hope this film gets a lot of attention at Oscar time. I'm not sure if Will Smith could win, but a nod is definitely possible. 4.5/5 |

Really wasn't very good. I didn't care enough for the movie to give an in depth review so this will be short. The story is interesting, but it deserves a better movie. Will Smith is decent, but the oscar buzz is undeserving. Just because someone does an accent doesn't mean they automatically deserve an oscar nomination. There's more to a performance, and really he doesn't hit the right notes. Alec Baldwin was good, Gugu Mbatha‑Raw is passable, Luke Wilson was distracting, Alec Baldwin has a super inconsistent southern accent, and pretty much all of the rest of the acting was awful.
The actors who play the players suffering from CTE are terrible. It's elevated by the fact that this film was very poorly written. It's very poorly directed as well, with some very terrible cinematography. There's so many uses of close ups, which take away from certain scenes, almost feeling claustrophobic at times. Sometimes I couldn't tell who was speaking because some scenes were very poorly framed. This movie didn't do anything for me, but I didn't leave offended. It was pretty much what I expected, except for Smith's disappointing performance. I'll forget I saw it in a month anyway. 5.5/10 |

I enjoyed this. It was very interesting. Will Smith was great. I wore my Broncos hoodie to it. Kinda ironic.
