My most anticipated film of the year. I know it's only 4 days before it's officially out, but it's a limited release and I'm not sure if we're even going to get it on the 15th. Either way, I'm giddy as a school girl.
Can you give us your thoughts on this after you see it please.

Here's the review I wrote back in September when I saw the movie:

Quote:
"Nazi punks, nazi punks, nazi punks, f*ck off!"
-The Ain't Rights (covering the Dead Kennedys)

There goes my dream of being in a punk rock band...

I don't think there's another film this year that had this much of an impact on me, and oh boy have I seen many films so far this year... Green Room is like an adrenaline shot filled with fear and paranoia - it feels like all of what the characters are feeling gets into your mind. This is an extremely intense, nail-bitting film, and it had me in stitches the entire time.

The anxiety lingering in the air during the entire film is perfection. Saulnier carefully and masterfully purposely unprepares you for all the surprises that are to come, and when they do, it's absolutely nerve-racking. It's not scary as a horror film should be, but it feels real and dangerous as a great horror-thriller should feel. Every decision the characters make, every step they take takes a toll on the viewer, and that's the ultimate art of filmmaking.

Patrick Stewart is given the opportunity to play the opposite of his Professor X - a ruthless plotting neo-nazi leader. He goes all out in his performance as an evil son of a *****, probably the best villanious role we'll ever see of him. I've always thought Anton Yelchin is a charismatic actor, and Imogen Poots is delightful, as always. Pretty much everyone was perfect in their roles, because all of them felt like they were real, you buy all of it.

Green Room is probably the best film I've seen all year, even topping the oh so shiny, oh so chrome beast of a film we call Mad Max: Fury Road. Not only that, but it's one of the most tense films I've ever seen. This is one of those films that has no trouble in pulling you right through the screen into its extremely violent and gruesome world, and probably the most entertaining confined horror/thrillers of the year. It'll be hard to knock this punk-rock madness off of the top spot this year, whatever's the weapon of your choosing, it'll surely be able to take a beating.

What a ride this was.

I was leaning forward in my seat more often than comfortably kicked back. I was breathing heavy. I was 100% invested and involved for every turn of the corner. This is one super intense, super violent thriller.

Also, they were handing these out for free after the screening.

My son and I saw a advance screening last night at Alamo Drafthouse (followed by a live stream Q&A with Saulnier and Anton Yelchin). We loved the film. It combines two of my favorite genre pictures, the siege/showdown and fish out of water vs the locals. You can defintely feel the DNA of John Carpenter in this film.

Both my son and I loved the movie. This is one of those films I was so consumed by while watching it, I wanted to go back and re-watch after the credits...this time without the shock factor, so I could appreciate the acting, story and cinematography etc.

Ron

PS: We came too late to get the shirt that jacob is picturing in the post above mine. Sold out crowd and from all we talked to loved the film too.

Anyone have this showing near them this weekend? Curious if anyone went today. Want to know how it's doing.

Unless you're in NYC or LA, you won't be seeing this this weekend.

Oh I know, but I was wondering if anyone here was able to go. I don't want it to be a well-reviewed genre picture that doesn't do well enough to go wide like what happened with The Guest . A lot of genre films struggle in limited release. Most are just best going wide off the bat. I hope I'll get to see this theatrically.

Ohhh, gotcha. Wide is 29th. I'm not sure how wide "wide" means for this film, but A24 has been pretty damn good at getting their pictures out. And I think with all the buzz they will get it into most cities.

But the ones they expand into wide release are the ones that do killer in limited release, such as Ex Machina and Spring Breakers. If Green Room doesn't then they might not go that wide.

Given all the good reviews this is getting, I'll definitely be checking this out. It might have to wait until Blu-ray if this doesn't go as wide as some of A24's filmes, but this is no longer flying underneath my radar at least.

Thumbs up

So, Movie City News has an estimated 35,000 from 3 theaters for this, giving it a Friday average of $11,666. That's really killer for a genre film in limited release. Great start.

Reviews are very good, but still not sold at seeing this, at least in theaters. I don't mind gory or violent films per se, but don't really like films with a lot of brutal violence or emphasis on pain/suffering, which based on the trailer seemed to be what the film was focused on.

Is this just one of those films that is simply not playing in Canada? Because it was been released wide in the US right? Yet it appears to not be playing anywhere up here. It's an odd thing that happens on occasion, I distinctly recall having to go to the States to see Sabotage.

One more week!

I just hope that when A24 says "Everywhere April 29th", they truly mean it. They did good with The Witch, but I'm still weary of A24 after their shoddy theatrical release of Room.

If you like punk and think you'd enjoy a Picard nazi I can't recommend this highly enough. A very realistic portrayal of touring in a punk/hardcore/metal band with very limited funds near the beginning too. Great stuff.
