As an Electrical Design Engineer for an audio company, I have experienced these growing pains through the development of CD and DVD optics first hand. Unfortunately, laser diodes and their manufacturing processes are much more difficult to overcome than the mechanical and magnetics issues of a hard disk. Today's hard disks, unfortunately, are reaching the limits of physics and magnetics. Laser diodes suffer the same issues at the wafer level. As wavelengths get shorter, light output levels need to be increased, which with smaller silicon geometries, the higher output levels will increase heat generation which will in turn shorten life, until the processes improve. However, I am impressed that you have a 20MEG, RLL I assume, still in operation. I still have one of my first cd player prtotypes from 1984 and it still works, as well.

Damn..I missed out on $24 by a week. The refurb player works fine. The packaging is a little bizarre. No original box. Just packaged with some bubble wrap, but otherwise everything is great. I don't think the player is worth 1k, but for 575, I'd jump.

It means, for one reason or another, the unit was returned to the factory. Sometimes because there is something generally wrong, others because someone returned it as "not working" when they just wanted to exchange it. The factory then goes through the machine, fixing whatever is wrong, and then sending it back out for sale. Because it has already been sold once, they can't sell it as new again, and thus it becomes "refurbished".
