Yeah, I have the same issue... I want a player so bad! I will have to make do with the A1 for a while.

does anyone have much experience with refurbs? as much as i'd like a new player, the budget says something different. of course, i don't want to drop $600 and then the player break on me in 91 days with the 90 day warranty.

also, i just don't want to deal with the frustration of the ps3 preorder/killing people on launch day thing since that was my expected intro into blu-ray

What's the difference? They were broken brand new and did not work right out of the box. My guess is that all of the refurbs are beta firmware updates and/or have been reworked to have the noise reduction filter disabled in hardware. Anyways, $600 is more in line with what the player is really worth.

the difference being that i'm more concerned about product reliability moving forward since i would want the player to last me for a long while

Given that the laser diode manufacturers are having such a poor yield, I would bet that any early Blu-Ray or HD DVD player will not be a long lifer. History usually repeats itself.....CD......DVD.......Blu-Ray\HD DVD.

poor yield does not equal short life. heck, i think up until a year ago i still had a 20 MEG hard drive still working for me. anyone else with opinions/thoughts?

The way I look at it; there wasn't anything wrong with most of these players to begin with. Most were returned in droves due to bad PQ on the early discs. The popular opinion at the time was that it was the fault of the player. We now know that wasn't the case at all. If you buy a refurb you will at least know it has been bench tested, And there's a good chance that the firmware would have been updated. I plan on picking one of these up in the next couple of weeks.

There is nothing wrong with these players. I would say that if you want a stand-alone player for $600, this is definitely the way to go.

There is nothing to compare the Samsung Blu-ray player to, but the Toshiba HD-DVD player. It's already a know fact that the Samsung player has filters that were designed to improve video quality, but were doing the exact opposite. It's an issue that Samsung is aware of, so aware that they are re-releasing the player with a new firmware that disables the filters, and all future players will not feature these filters. I am not sure if they have the new firmware for download or order, but it's definately worth looking into if you have or plan to get a Samsung Blu-Ray player.

I think all future players will get better and better. Infact a $300 Blu-ray player in 2008, will be comparable to the $1000 players that will be out this year.

Early adopters always get screwed. Those who wait will get the most for their buck.
PS3 is the only solution to the Blu-Ray void while standalone players drop in price.

I certainly agree that future players will continue to improve upon previous players but I'm also confident that a $300 player in '08 will be better than any player that's out in '06.[/b]

I completely agree. Early adopters are having to deal with two formats again as well. The PS3 is definitely the best bang for your buck right now. Trying to find one this year will prove to be another challenge.
