Completely agree about the 1981 sequel.

Feels like Hellraiser 2 to me.

Not as good as the original, but maintains an atmospheric continuity that I really enjoy.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong I like sequels that stand on there own as well, probably more but if it's gonna be a continuation they have to get the same atmosphere/tone to get me to buy into it.

I love Halloween III, but the ticket-buying public spoke, and outright rejected the idea of Halloween sequels sans Myers.

I think Halloween 4 and on as an anthology could have been really good. I like most of the Halloween films, but after part III, they really have issues. Halloween III used to be considered an awful film, but I love it. Seems more and more fans are starting to realize just how awesome it is these days. Halloween I and II are perfect films to me, Halloween I is obviously the best, but Halloween II really felt like it was connected with the first one. You could easily watch them back to back and believe they were filmed pretty much together. Halloween II has minor flaws, but non that really bother me. Part 4 and on do have flaws that bother me... however, I still dig them, except Resurrection. That felt like a bad Scream film. Not that I don't like Scream, cause I love I, but Halloween shouldn't feel like Scream... especially a bad Scream.

III always has been awesome it's just fairly recently people seem to be coming round to the fact Michael Myers isn't even in it. Soon people will start accepting how great Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is... yup, any minute now.

Would they have felt the same had we not received Halloween II prior? I like Halloween II, but I think if that precedent of Michael Myers returning wasn't set in II, people would have been much more open to an anthology type series.

Personally, I don't get the point of remaking something that is already a masterpiece. There are hundreds of movies that are average or garbage that are in serious need of a remake. Hell, no one has yet to do a true to the book adaptation of The Island of Dr Moreau. Why not someone do that? Remake the stuff that needs to be remade.

In concerns to being an anthology series, I think the biggest mistake they made WAS making Halloween 2 the way they did. If they really wanted to stick to their guns of making it an anthology series they should have been One and Done with Myers. By giving Halloween 2 the continuing story of Myers, they gave fans more of a reason to follow him, which disappeared with 3. But I can't be sure of that cause who knows what would have happened had they gone in that direction sooner.

I love Friday 5, but I do admit that the bootleg Jason aspect does still bother me... still awesome though.

stupid children have too much money. they won't watch "lame old" movies, so you give them the same big bright shining turd and they feel better. never let a fool keep his money...

H2 had a pretty definitive ending, but people still wanted / expected Myers in H3. Look at the open ending of H1. Do you really think anything other than "more of the night HE came home" would have been accepted from H2?

Like I said, the public spoke. Halloween = Michael Myers. H3 would have done better as just "Season of the Witch," sans the Halloween moniker. The anthology thing was an interesting idea, but it was never going to happen.

See, I don't get their thinking. Myers was killed in the second movie. He was D-E-A-D. Not to mention Carpenter stated this many times. If people thought HIII was supposed to have Myers in it then they are morons and clearly did not pay attention to anything else.

That's not answering my question. It's not about H2's ending, definitive or not. I'm suggesting the possibility that people's expectation for Myers in H3 would not be as fervent had we not had Myers in H2 at all. Granted, I'm sure there would still be an expectation, but at that point there was no precedent yet for his return. Had he not returned in H2, it might still have been a surprise, but something more easily accepted.

I suggest the public spoke the way they did, as you say, because of the precedent H2 set in having Myers return. Halloween = Michael Myers because H2 exists.

There's no question dropping the Halloween moniker would have helped H3, but the anthology idea was hurt more because of H2. If Season Of The Witch with the Hallowen moniker debuted prior to Myers return, I think audiences would have been much more open to the idea. I definitely don't believe "it was never going to happen."
