The Swing band/Glam Rock fusion song is some next level stuff.
Or the Disco-Country mash-ups before that became vogue are ahead of its time. Saw it in the theatre when it came out, own the SE DVD, and I hope they treat the sound well. It looked fine on DVD, I can imagine the upgrade really helping. |

![]() I always get a laugh from Michael Beck's assertion that XANADU hurt his acting career. The only thing that killed Michael Beck's acting career is Michael Beck's "acting". The guy's a stiff. He's barely got enough talent to qualify as a guest corpse on NCIS. But I do love this movie and I have come to appreciate Michael Beck's wooden persona as part of that 1970's charm when an untalented pretty boy could get cast in a movie simply on the basis of good hair. |

I simply cannot believe that it is finally being released on bluray. I remember seeing this film back in 1980, at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York. The film had such an impact on me, that I went multiple times to see it, 20 times to be exact. I collected the newspaper clippings, the poster, the soundtrack album and the souvenir book. I have the film on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD (both the standard edition, as well as the Special Edition), and now I can finally retire the DVDs and stick with the bluray. This is the best news that I have read all year, YAY!!!!!

I worried. If this is the same master that was released for the DVD - which was supposedly from a HD master - the sound is screwed up. UNIVERSAL has made a 5.1 bump-up from the original 4.0; and when they did the bass and separation of the channels was lost. Both XANADU and FLASH GORDON where done at the same time with the same horrible results. If you have the previous, and first, DVD releases of these titles compare and you'll hear what I'm talking about.
XANDAU had a lot of front to back separation in the original DVD - it was all gone the (remastered DVD edition that came next. Visually, there's an improvement) I had spoken to my contact at UNIVERSAL he looked into it but said they weren't will to fix it. That around 2007, or 08. I can only hope they've made a new master since then - but again, FLASH GORDON was fixed for BD. |
