I think the UK will have this too. Life of Pi in the UK has also a better cover than US one.

If you haven't seen the movie I wouldn't blind buy it. I really wanted it to be good. Liked the advertising, the cast and director being the same as Silver Linings Playbook. But the movie was completely uneventful.

I agree, this was a one and done for me, even my wife who dragged me to see this, she said "I don't need to see this again", that's code for don't buy this.

I just read an interview with colorist Stephen Nakamura: http://www.definitionmagazine.com/jo...-ready-for-hdr

He originally graded Joy in HDR.

Quote:
...and Joy (you will hardly notice the HDR in this but it is different).
Quote:
...Then there’s Joy which is like a straight drama so the transfer doesn’t have anything that is really any different, there’s a consistency we have through the movie, there’s nothing that is a lot darker or brighter. It looks different as HDR as you’ve got 350 foot-lamberts and all that contrast, but it feels like rec709.

Maybe some are privy to more technical details, but it doesn't look like this will be HDR graded. If it was, the press release's technical list would state it. And the cover makes no mention either.

And no Atmos because it was only mixed in 5.1.

It says Ultra HD Premium on the cover and I think that automatically implies HDR.

Be interesting if it wasn't though. If it was SDR with P3 (mapped into 2020, natch) and upscaled to 2160p (which would help to retain the 2K colour resolution of the master) then you'd basically have the theatrical 2K master on a disc, compression and slightly reduced resolution (3996x2160 to 3840x2160) notwithstanding.

Target has a $5 gift card when you pre-order this title at $29.99

Not bad, hope they do this with the other 4k new releases

Kinda yeah I suppose, but then his point is more that if someone wants it to look closer to traditional SDR/709 values then he's happy to do that, because his thing is not to jazz it all up for the sake of it.

But there's still the issue of having someone other than the filmmakers or the original colourist doing the regrading, which for me remains a valid concern regarding older films. If you get someone with taste at the controls then hopefully you'll get a subtle extension of what was originally made, but if we get some gormless tech who likes to twiddle his knobs to maximum it could end up being a horror show.

Even having the original colorist can be overrated. Unless it's someone specifically assigned by the filmmakers like Lou Levinson (Spielberg, Lucas, etc) it can be a tossup. A lot of the time the transfers are just signed off on by a rep - not even the cinematographer or director. And they'll just watch a random scene or two here and there, not the film start to finish. Levinson remarked that some colorists had no idea what the movie looked like projected, they were just trying to make it look good on their monitors. It's changed a lot since the mid-2000s where everything went to DI with the filmmakers involved, but for older films? Best guess.

Any first impressions? How's the quality compared to the other Fox discs and the Blu-ray?

Can you tell me if it's region protected? I can see that Spanish is included in the languages, don't know if it's Latin or Castilian, but I would buy this copy from the USA if it's not protected.

Thanks!

You do tend to see the same names pop up over and over in the digital grading arena though. There's very much a core cadre of those folks who really are the best at what they do and whom the filmmakers trust to take care of their vision time after time, so if it were left up to them then I'd be happy with that.

But I am more relaxed about the whole process now as I've had a small taste of the beauty that these HDR grades can bring to the table, and as you say, with ANY new grading carried out after the fact - HDR or not - it's likely that only a small amount of them were explicitly signed off by the filmmakers themselves, as not everyone has dat clout. Again, it comes down to the taste of the individual colourist and whether they're sensitive to the original goals and ideals of the photography.
