Too early to remember. Half the films nominated last year weren't really that well known about until after the summer at least.

What do you mean? It currently has a 100% on RT.

Rotten Tomatoes doesn't tell the whole story. They grade things on an up-or-down scale.

Anyway, the general consensus is that the performances are good but the script is weak. Once the film opens in Europe next month, that score will go down.

Meanwhile, I saw that Lionsgate (via CBS) is distributing Tribeca hit Dean. Possible Supporting Actor nom for Kevin Kline?

Well, I only have Florence predicted for Best Actress and Supporting Actor.

If that's the case then the next hurdle is for the Academy to even remember the movie at the end of the year, since it's getting an April release abroad and a dumping ground release Stateside this August.

Movie Academy Stresses Diversity As It Invites Record 683 For Membership Including Nate Parker, Freida Pinto & the Wachowskis
by Erik Pedersen
June 29, 2016 12:30pm

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today invited a record 683 people to joins its ranks, and was careful to include a breakdown by gender and race. That’s more than double last year’s 322 invitees. The new list comprises 46% women, including Rachel McAdams and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, and 41% people of color, including Idris Elba, James Hong and rising stars Michael B. Jordan, Chadwick Boseman and The Force Awakens‘ John Boyega. Lana and Lilly Wachowski also were invited.

Diversity has been the Word of the Year for the Academy, which took no small amount of heat over a lack thereof in this year’s Oscar acting categories.

“We’re proud to welcome these new members to the Academy and know they view this as an opportunity and not just an invitation — a mission and not just a membership,” Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said in a statement. “This class continues our long-term commitment to welcoming extraordinary talent reflective of those working in film today. We encourage the larger creative community to open its doors wider and create opportunities for anyone interested in working in this incredible and storied industry.”

The new invitees include 28 Oscar winners, range in age from 24 to 91 and represent 59 countries. Check out the complete list here. Below is a graph of female invitees and those of color, provided by the Academy:

I disagree 100%. I want to see the Oscars not just choosing the most Oscar-baity films. I want to see people win that normally wouldn't. I don't want a group of 50+ year old white men determining what will and won't win. I think they should keep adding younger and younger film makers.

This almost seems like reaching. They invited Michelle Rodriguez. What the heck does she know about good acting? She is terrible and one note in pretty much everything.

She's in the business, so why not? While she will never win an Oscar (more likely than not), it doesn't mean she can't judge good acting. I've never directed a film, but I know a well-directed film when I see one. Doesn't mean I can replicate Stanley Kubrick.

Seems odd to me to have just being in the business as the only requirement. Just include everyone then.

Just did some research and she's been nominated by several prestigious Film Societies and Critics Associations, and she won the Breakthrough Performance - Female award from the National Board of Review back in 2000. That's probably how she qualifies.

I know I am sure as heck not qualified to judge what deserves to win.

I never knew she won anything. Why doesn't she do anything noteworthy in movies than? She is wooden and one note in basically every movie. I always wonder how the hell she keeps getting work over and over.

Maybe writers and directors create characters that are supposed to be pretty one-note and when they think about casting who they want, they immediately think of her?

Personally, I absolutely loved her as Ana Lucia.

I think American Honey is going to be quite a heavy hitter come nominations.

Also hope Swiss Army Man is up for Best Sound Mixing.

If she is supposed to be as horrible as she is in SWAT, Avatar, F&F, Resident Evil, Blood range, Battle LA, etc.. than props to her. Not sure why in the hell a director would purposely want a one note s*** performance, but hey if you say so why not.

I looked over the list more and there are some i am surprised they weren't part of it yet like Bruce Greenwood. I like most of the list for the names I know.
