I thought the Revenant was the best film of 2015, IMO. I'd rank it higher than Fury Road and Inside Out.

Smurfs 2 is the best. Filmed with the sony F65, a real 4k camera. If you were wowed by the 35 minutes if imax of star trek 2, you'll be wowed by this one as the entire movie looks like full screen imax.

Revenant, sicario are close, but mostly filmed with 3.4k cameras.

Star Trek 2 also great.

Yes, but I have to get over the fact that I'm watching Smurfs 2.

I own 21 UHD Blu-Rays. IMO the best I've seen is The Revenant, Sicario, and The Martian/Martian Extended Edition. I own a 4K tv with no HDR and these movies were still head and shoulders better than the Blu-Ray versions.

I'd say Revenant, The Martian (either version), and Batman v Superman are probably the best available right now. Just about everything else out now is a 2K upscale, which is only a marginal improvement over the 1080p release usually. Star Trek Into Darkness looks good if for no other reason than the IMAX footage and the HDR improvements, but still a 2K release...

I have to majorly disagree with the batman vs superman.

85% of the movie is a 2k upscale and it shows. only 30 minutes of the movie is true 4k. and a bulk of that comes AFTER the finale at the end. i thought man of steel overall consistently looked better, and thats a 2k upscale as well.

I'd wager you're wrong on your percentages, but not by a lot. I'd put it at closer to 40/60%. I'm not sure what the workflow was for doing the CG shots, but I can't help but feel like at least some of them composited the CG 2K into a 4K frame.

At any rate, I'd still put it far ahead of most other UHD releases which are literally 100% 2K upscaled, hence its inclusion in my list.

30 minutes of imax scenes. Movie is 182 minutes. I already did the math. Only 15% is true 4k, the rest is upscaled. The sharpness is nowhere near the top movies with 4k DIs such as Smurfs 2, revenant, sicario, or even the imax scenes of star trek 2. 30 minutes look great, but the other 150 minutes are very sub par.

If they scanned the other footage at 4K, then it wouldn't simply be the IMAX scenes. Again, without knowing the workflow they used, it's hard to say specifically how much is actually 4K and how much is just 2K upscaled, but upon watching it three times I can say it's definitely more than 15%...

And I'll save you the trouble with Star Trek Into Darkness: it's a 2K DI, and it shows unfortunately. The HDR is a worthy upgrade though, and it still looks better than the BD.

I will be sincerely happy when we can get raw screenshots of movies for comparison purposes and put to rest this guessing/speculating.

Which disc has the best temporal resolution? I don't have equipment yet but I'm not convinced that the motion detail is as good at 50 Mbps 2160p as 35 Mbps 1080p. Those barebones Mastered in 4K discs from Sony seemed to glide right off the screen.

Out of the three that I own, I'm going to say The Revenant. I can't wait to see the Star Trek: Into Darkness IMAX scenes once I get it in 4K.

My personal ranking of all UHD Blu-rays I've seen so far. I'm just rating the overall quality. Some are higher on the list because of resolution, others are higher because of great use of HDR.

The Revenant
Sicario
Deadpool
The Expandables 3 (I've had no problems with grayish blacks)
Amazing Spider-Man 2
Pineapple Express
The Martian
X-Men: Days of future past
Pride + Prejudice + Zombies
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (looks great for 16mm)
Independence Day
Star Trek
Joy
Kingsman - The Secret Service
Hancock
San Andreas
Maze runner
Maze runner: Scorch trials
The 5th wave
Ender's game

Unfortunately, BvS brings out the grain haters in full force, and I can't tell if you just can't adjust to Snyder's chosen photography style by what you've said so far. Revenant, by comparison, is very clean looking and it makes perfect sense why people gravitate towards it (the same can be said of Smurfs 2, obviously 4K CGI will look amazing). I actually had to explain film grain to my co-workers when I had BvS on display on a UN55KS9500 at work a few days ago, so I expect that's the reason why we aren't seeing unanimous love for BvS. We had similar problems with 300 and Watchmen.

Like I said in my last reply, I'll be very happy when we can start doing 4K vs 1080 screenshot comparisons because then it will be far less subjective.

Back to Star Trek Into Darkness: the IMAX sequences look very nice, don't get me wrong. But they're clearly not bringing 4K detail. I think the switching aspect ratios enhances the scenes, and it's always nice when you have content that fills the entire screen, but for me it's the HDR that's the biggest improvement for the two Star Trek films.
This. Am a screencap dork and have been capturing calibrated DVD & BD direct comparisons for nearly a decade. Can't wait to be able to start doing it for UHD BDs.

Also agree with you regarding BvS. They did a fine job upscaling it (not ruining it with dnr or artificial sharpening) keeping the grain nicely intact, bd100 of data breathing room for mostly fine looking compression which is something star trek could've greatly benefited from, and the excellent hdr grade on its own is almost worth the price of admission. I'd currently put it somewhere in my top ten (out of nearly 40 UHDs viewed to date).

Mad Max Fury Road has the biggest leap in terms of clarity. You guys can complain about it being a 2K DI all you want, but it's true.

Unfortunately the HDR has wildly changed the color palette of the film, which is why I stick with the Blu Ray. It never had a Dolby Vision/HDR release in theaters so there's nothing to reference it to in terms of what the filmmakers may have wanted.

The other major issue with the UHD is varying brightness and contrast. From shot to shot in the same they both alter from extreme to dim. It's really weird and super distracting.

Revenant is very consistent but not good if you wanna show off the wide color gamut.

Tbh we still don't have a movie worthy of being that absolutely perfect reference disc. I suppose The Martian may come closest.

Star Trek Into The Darkness had elevated blacks in the IMAX space scenes. Unacceptable for OLED. It's as if the space scenes used 1% as it's bottom, instead of 0%. 50 brightness is the proper HDR brightness on most of my UHD blu rays, but with this movie, I had to lower to 46.
