Most people hate PLASMA'S & they dont even no why! I F**KING love um & LCD too (I have both) but the PQ from my Plazzy's is so f**K!ng good that I would of done the same thing you did

I too bought my 55" Sony 720P rear projection 2.5yrs ago and still enjoy the PQ i get through My PS3 and Dish Network. When I was shopping for my TV I took budget as a major factor, I looked at the TV's visually side by side at BB, Good Guys, Circuit City and picked the TV that was most visually appealing to me. I also took in to account how easy it would be to replace the bulb when it went out (this can be expensive for the part and the service to replace it!). I was watching Cars on Blu-ray yesteday and just could not get over how vivid the colors where, the textures, and how well the movie was done. I have seen Cars on DVD countless times and this was the first time I actually noticed "things" due to the better PQ. I never noticed Mater in the court room blowing a spit bubble before yesterday!

[QUOTE=richieb1971;444610]I have a 768 panel that accepts a 1080p signal, to be honest it looks just as good as any 1080p screen i've seen. I'd not consider a 1080p screen until I was shopping for over 50" because the detail is lost on anything smaller. Plus you have to be on top of the screen to see any difference smaller than 50".

Yup!

If my budget means I can get a 1080p, or a larger and higher quality 720p TV - I will pick the 720 every time.
720p does not have the resolution of 1080p, and therefore, has a lower PQ provided the contrast and color gamot are the same. A 50" set produces what I call 'Screen Door 720p' where the pixel structure is visible. This is a distraction to me if what I am trying to get from 1080p Blu-ray is a smooth looking image with 'detail down to the grain' on set that is going to fill 30% of my vision. It takes but a moment to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p sets on a store display wall.

Looking at a 50" 720P and 1080P set on a store display wall - it takes all but a moment to see which is 720P or 1080P. Besides, why degrade a 1080P blu ray image to fit a lower spatial resolution?
I am not sure if you read any of my other posts, but if you had you would realize that I said depending on budget, sometimes it is better to get a 720p TV because it could mean a better picture. Yes, if you are looking at two quality TVs, one 720 and the other 1080, the 1080 will probably look a little better. However, personal budgets do not always allow for a large quality 1080p TV.

My first HDTV purchase was a 55" 720p RPTV. It was a high end TV and still produces an amazing picture. At the time of purchase, there were no 1080p TVs on the market.

My next purchase was a 42" 720 plasma for the bedroom. 1080p TVs were now available, but still expensive. I could have picked one up, but I would have had to go smaller or get a no name entry level model. I opted for the brand name quality 720 TV, and I am still very happy with it.

Next purchase was a 32" 720 plasma for the living room. For the size and distance to the TV, 1080p would have been pointless. The TV has a beautiful image and I am very happy with it.

Next purchase was 3 32" 720 plasmas (one for each kids room, and 1 for the kids game room). Since I was buying 3 at a time, 1080 would have been much more expensive - plus because of the size and because they were for the kids, I didn't care...

All of the above TVs (with the exception of the RPTV), I had a budget I need to stick to, and 1080 TVs would not work within that budget. I am happy with all of them, and I think for the money, I am getting the best picture possible.

The last purchase was the projector - of this I went with 1080p because I had a higher budget, and at 110", the resolution would make a difference.

If I had tons of money and no budget to stick to, perhaps all my TVs would be 1080p - but sadly, I live in the real world.

There is no question that a really nice high end 720p will look way better than a cheap crappy no name 1080p. I have a Sony 3LCD 720p and it looks great. It was by far the best looking 720p at Sears when I bought it in my price range. There are much nicer now but it was about 2 years ago when I purchased it.

1080p is great if you can spend the money on a nice one but if not then dont bother and get a nice quality 720p. Vizio, Protron, etc....2160p wouldnt make me buy one...Id rather have a TV that I know will last and have a great picture too.

But hey, if people wanna waste their money on bottom end TVs thats their problem, not mine

I will tell you and others that have gotten their sets calibrated, that a well calibrated 720p set will look better than almost all 1080p sets uncalibrated. You can buy an XBR4 and it will not look better out of the box than a well calibrated 720p set. It is a fact and any person that knows about video and the way it is processed will tell you. 1080p is just a number. For it to look its best it has to be tweaked. Most people have their contrast too high and there color is way too saturated for the picture to look it's best whether it is a 720 or 1080.
You can save money and but a descent 720p plasma, like a pioneer (5080 for about $2k), or a (Panny plasma 77u) for about $1200 and spend $400 on a good calibration and it will always look better than most good 1080p monitors uncalibrated.

Im sorry plasmas are nice, but not for the cost. I personally feel that LCD or DLP can look almost as good for a fraction of the price. My personal prefference is LCD.

My wife and I have a 37" LG 720p LCD HDTV. We are happy with the quality of it. We got it back in January (almost a year ago now) at Circuit City with a 2 year no interest financing deal. We aren't exactly rich, so we were trying to save as much money as possible. We originally bought a Sylvania 720p TV of the same size, but after getting it home the quality just seemed terrible. I then went onto Circuitcity.com and checked reviews for the TV which were not too good on average. I then searched for other TVs of roughtly the same size and type, and found the LG getting a lot of good reviews. It was only about an extra $200 or $300, and that spread over a couple of years for paying it off wasn't much to add to it. We exchanged it and got the new one home, and were MUCH happier with the quality. We've been making large enough payments each month that by the time the 2 years is up the TV will be paid off.

From what I understand, there's not much of a point in even going with a 1080p set unless you get something bigger than 42" since at the smaller size the difference is going to be minimal at best.

I would eventually like to get a good set that is about 50 inches and has a 1080p display down the road, but that probably won't happen for a couple/few years. By then the technology will probably become more affordable anyway, and we'll be able to get something a lot nicer for what we'd probably pay for a lower quality set now.

But forthe time being, we're happy with what we have. Blu-Ray movies look great on it.

Well that clears it up - everyone should go pick up a 65" 1080p TV today. Except not everyone can afford a large 1080p TV.

It is like telling someone who can only afford to buy an entry level Sony receiver and small Sony speakers that they should buy a Denon and B&W speakers to "get the most out of bluray".

Perhaps the main difference is that plasma is better than LCD?

I have never owned LCD but I recently bought a 1080p Panasonic plasma.

Ratatouille on this plasma is like heaven on earth. It is better than anything I have ever seen before.

Again I've never owned LCD so maybe they are good too. I just wanted to say that plasma is phenomenal.
