I guess it depends on how you define the word "collect". I tend to buy movies I know I'll be watching on a regular basis, so a lot end up skipped which aren't my taste. Its taken me six years to build what I have so far, but I'm in no desperate rush to hit a certain number.

By definition, it is a hobby. Unless you get paid to do this. And most people who do get paid to collect (youtube unboxers) still end up spending more than they earn.

Film watching, evaluation and discussion is my hobby. Blu-ray is just the best way to do that at the moment.

movie collecting in general has been a hobby for me since a teen-ager.
I have original one-sheets, lobby cards, stills, figurines, and tons of movies that I truly love to indulge in with my spare time and money. ![]() I'm truly tired of feeling like I have to justify it much less apologize for it on this site... ![]() |

I certainly consider it a hobby, I have been collecting since my days of VHS, a hundred of them then flung out with only a few left, then on to DVD with a hundred or so of them and now onto Blu-ray with 200+, so this is something thats been going on since the late 80's with our first VHS player a national brand I believe. thats 2/3rds of my life. and I still have that fire in my belly.

I'd have to say no. Home theater is my hobby, movie purchases are just an expense of the hobby. When I was racing, racing was the hobby. Fuel, tires and other purchases made were not the hobby.

If you enjoy having and curating a collection, it's a hobby. If you've ever bought specialty packaging instead of a regular release, not due to it being the only option, or being cheaper, it's a hobby.
