I don't think any of Renny Harlin's action flicks have aged very well, with maybe the exception of Cliffhanger, (a DH ripoff, oddly enough). Tried to watch The Long Kiss Goodnight recently, (a film which I've enjoyed), and had to turn it off an hour in. It was excruciating.
Well it's close between the two but I do slightly prefer Die Hard 2. DHWAV is excellent for the most part but I find the finale really lets it down. I mean it stays fantastic up until the ship/ boat explodes then nose dives after that IMO. I think DH2 maintains the excitement and energy for the duration of the runtime plus it has the Christmas setting which I love and the airport setting which feels like a natural progression after the first movie. I know it's just a carbon copy of the original but it really pushes all the right buttons for me.

Regarding Harlin I have an automatic bias with his work as I grew up loving his movies and so many of them hold a special place in my heart, no matter how cheesy some of them are. Cutthroat Island has long been one of my favourite movies.

Saw TLKG theatrically and found it excruciating on the first viewing, with only Sam Jackson and Brian Cox making it remotely tolerable ( a service both have performed in plenty of terrible movies). Geena Davis effectively had her screen career destroyed thanks to then - husband Harlin's one-two punch of Cutthroat Island and this.

I still have friends who love this movie, god only knows why.

Haven't seen any of the LW sequels but Die Hard 2 is my least favorite of that series aside from the it-barely-even-counts-as-an-entry fifth movie.

I love both. But what puts DH2 slightly up a tick is that it's a Christmas movie like the first Die Hard. I watch both back-to-back during my Christmas movie watching each year.

As much as I love DHwaV, I still feel it was a missed opportunity with it not being set during Christmas. It would've made for an epic action-themed Christmas movie trilogy.

They're both great. The Lethal Weapon films are the best action series in film history with all 4 being excellent in my book. Die Hard 2 is extremely underrated for some reason. Its one hell of an action movie that's only weakness is it doesn't have as charismatic a lead villain as Alan Rickman in the first Die Hard. Other than that it's a blast.

You haven't seen any Lethal Weapon sequels? That needs to be rectified!

LW2 is the better of the two for sure, but not by that much IMO. DH2 is the best sequel in the DH franchise to me because it feels like DH1(I don't care if it's a cheap imitation). I actually just watched them back to back and they compliment each other perfectly. The other DH sequels feel like different universes. Both movies hold a special place in my heart though.

Growing up, for xmas I always watched:
Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
Gremlins

Pure 80's bliss!

Lethal Weapon 2 is a billion times better than Die Hard 2, and I say that as someone who finds Die Hard 2 fun and enjoyable.

Similarly Die Hard 3 is a billion times better than Lethal Weapon 3.

I don't think any of the later LW sequels plumb the same depths as the Die Hards do. Some might disagree, though.
Personally, I love them all and LW4's "Stop in Chinese, motherf***er!" is a staple phrase in my house lol

Yes and no. LW2 beats DH2 and LW3 beats DHWAV for me. The first two-thirds of DHWAV are brilliant but the movie hits the skids as soon as it leaves Manhattan and gets to the aqueduct. And no Bedelia, Atherton or Veljohnson either.

Yeah, but that's one of the reasons DH 2 is shit, cramming all those characters in for no reason. It's a complete box-ticking exercise of a sequel.

If I had to pick a favorite Lethal Weapon it would be part 3.

Lethal weapon 3 vs diehard 3 is a better question

Diehard 2 is pretty crappy.

Lethal Weapon 2 is great.

Apart from the dated politics, Lethal Weapon 2 is a far better film than Die Hard 2. It's just a better film overall. Die Hard 2 is fun but plays up the sequel angle a bit too much, it's not quite as meta as some modern films but McClane complaining about the same shit happening to him is just too obvious. Plus as dated as LW2's politics are, DH2 is so incredibly, laughably dated. All this new technology like "fax machines" and "airphones" and "porcelain glocks that cost more money than you make in a month," WTF? Plus, just the idea of McClane being off-duty but walking around secure areas of the airport with his gun on him, or the airport seemingly going about its normal business after terrorists crash a plane there, time has just made that film seem so ridiculous now. The action scenes are good though and unlike the later entries, at least it FEELS like a Die Hard movie.
