Was there a reason that SF didn't use the original negative?

Dunno. Maybe it would've cost more to access the original, maybe they weren't allowed to access the original. But here's hoping Arrow can twist Universal's arm and make it happen for this release (though we may well just end up with Arrow's take on Shout's new scan, i.e. take the raw data and grade & clean it up themselves, which will be a lovely second prize).

Given that I've watched what I wanted to watch out of the new Shout extras (which also may well end up on this Arrow release anyway as per TLADILA) I might as well sell it while the going's good.

Great news, fingers crossed for a boxset similar to the Videodrome & Donnie Darko sets. Anything larger and I'd likely just wait for a standard release.

The usual nonsense, Arrow releasing something that Shout! has already released, blah, blah. Forgetting that this release is UK specific and the Shout! release for the US market.

Easily my favourite Carpenter film, and one of my all-time favourite horrors. I personally CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on this.

I've been requesting it from Arrow for years, and they're delivering releases at a higher quality more frequently than ever before. This could not have come at a better time.

Honestly, other than maybe Waking Life, this is my favourite ever Arrow Video announcement - but I know this has even more potential in terms of extras, booklet, and packaging. I love this film so much!

This sort of crap is the reason why I usually avoid the Facebook pages for SF and Arrow:

I have no idea how Arrow will top the already stellar Scream Factory release.

Who knows...maybe they could even get the 1951 original? Or include a soundtrack CD, or a third disc of extras? Possibly even brand new remaster done themselves? And at least a massive booklet and poster? Question mark?

This is great news, but it's unfortunate they couldn't have announced it when Shout released their Blu-ray back in October as I would have just waited, but that's Blu-ray collecting for ya. No doubt at the start of next year, Universal will announce a 4K UHD Blu-ray of it!

Anyway, it's bound to get a set like Videodrome/Donnie Darko, and if it's a 4K remaster, it should look amazing! I expect it'll be nearer October before it's out, if not later maybe, but it should be a great release. One of my top 10 films of all time!

I may have to get this in addition to the Shout release, depending on what the package includes. If this was a mediocre movie I wouldn't even buy it at all, but because it's The Thing, double purchase isn't a big deal.

I just noticed that the 1950s The Thing is licensed by Universal in the UK whereas it is Warner in the US. So it could definitely be included as an extra. It's just about the only way it could differentiate itself from the insane extras of the Shout release without being an imitation. A perfect imitation.

My initial guess is that the 50s Thing being included is the "exciting things planned" in the announcement.

As for the main feature itself, it's probably going to be a better/less manipulated with encoding of the artificially sharpened Shout release. Don't know what makes people think that Arrow would do a restoration of the OCN when releasing the Shout master would be a huge upgrade over what is available in the UK (old Universal master). Stuff like that costs money and plenty of it, and a 4K scan of the OCN probably wouldn't be as big of an upgrade of the Shout master (untampered) as the Shout is over the old Universal master.

If there is noticeable improvement over the Shout and the limited edition isn't any thicker than the Videodrome LE, I might get it. Or I may wait for the regular case release.

The above example is why I just don't bother with social media. Period.

Too many screaming idiots on FB, Twitter and the rest.

A few forums and good old fashioned e-mail is all I need.
The rest I do in the real world.

On the subject of The Thing though - Arrow should do a limited edition steelbook for this release.

A double-feature steelbook paired with the 1951 film would be the icing on the cake.

Maybe package it in a block of 'ice' - and include John Campbell's original novella 'Who Goes There?'

A soundtrack CD would be nice.

[Show spoiler]Facebook? Arsebook, more like. Just can't be bothered with cr*p like that.
