It is a dirty trick. In fact, PowerDVD is on sale almost all the year and its price is always between USD 50 and 60. Once one sale ends, another starts. A real offer was there before Christmas - buy PDVD 16 now and get PDVD 17 in April for free. I almost bought it and now I am glad I did not. I will receive one in the Pioneer drive bundle.
If you are not planning to buy an UHD drive, the choice do not matter, the differences are almost none. Then buy PDVD16. When PDVD 17 comes out, it will be (probably) for full price for some time. |

I wonder why Pioneer did not put the official Ultra HD Blu-ray logo in drive's front panel. Just ordinary Blu-ray logo.
There is very interesting info in Anandtech's article about the whole protection scheme and how everything in PC must comply with AACS2. For example CPU needs to be SGX (Software Guard Extensions) instructions compliant. "Intel first incorporated SGX into its Skylake CPUs in 2015, but not all of such chips support the tech: for example, some of the early higher-end processors have it disabled." Quote:

These requirements are absurd. Probably the only reason that it requires a brand new CPU is because of stuff like HDCP 2.2 compliance or other DRM disguised as new standards. I was holding off on buying a BD drive for my PC due to UHD drives being released soon, but this pretty much forces me to buy a new PC.

Good luck. I am going to buy one too. I must replace my CPU and motherboard in 2017 anyway, thus I will buy either i5/i7 + Z270 or wait for Zen APU + X370. I guess the fothcoming AMD APUs with integrated graphics should be able to do the same HDCP security trick?

P.S.:
So far only six Z270 motherboards have HDMI 2.0 (2x Gigabyte, 2x Supermicro, 2x Biostar), all others have HDMI 1.4, even top models from MSI or ASUS. Out of these six only Gigabyte and Supermicro expressly mention HDCP 2.2. |

If anyone finds a motherboard/UEIF that supports SGX and HDCP 2.2 please post your findings here. I have downloaded the owners manual for some the latest ASUS and Gigabyte Z270 MB’s and they make no mention of SGX and HDCP 2.2.

If you have newer motherboards you might be able to enable SGX in bios, it might be disabled by default. I have never checked for SGX until yesterday & my motherboard does not have it.

As I wrote earlier, there are 6 mobos with HDMI 2.0, four of these support HDCP 2.2 - Gigabyte Gaming 9, Gaming 8 and two from Supermicro.

I've read posts in PC forums from software engineers stating that Bios updates could include SGX & HDCP 2.2. for newer motherboards

Yes, I know about those. The problem is the Gigabyte ones made no mention of SGX (Intel's Software Guard Extensions). No SGX then no UHD BD playback. Kaby Lake CPU's do have SGX but if the UEFI (BIOS) does not support it then you are SOL. Have not looked at the Supermicro.
