Why the sad face and bummer word? Think you must have misunderstood me. Unlike US (and Canadian) version, current-day UK Casino Royale is uncut. US version was fairly heavily censored. It is good that you bought this version of CR. Additional violence in CR is a good thing, makes the film more adult.

As the title says. Do Universal Studios tend to region free their blu rays? Or do they region lock their discs? I can't remember - I know others such as WB do normally region free their discs.

universal could go either way, sometimes region locking, sometimes region free.
Paramount tends to be region free, however, the titles that they acquired from other previous distributors (and re-issued under their logo) remain region locked. Warner is almost always region free. Last edited by lateralspin; 12-13-2021 at 10:50 PM. |

It's extremely rare for Universal to lock their own discs. If they're distributing something in only certain territories (ie Studio Canal in Australia) then they tend to lock it, but it's not something they usually do on their own titles.

Universal, Paramount, and Sony are generally Region ABC (even for titles they only have overseas distribution rights to), but on extremely rare occasions there will be a indie pickup or merely distributed title that is region locked. Paramount sometimes locks titles they only released in the US (Popeye, Wolf of Wall Street, Bugsy Malone) and most of the Sony Pictures Classics titles are region locked.
Fox/MGM and Disney Blus are sometimes region locked (mostly early releases) and other times region free. Hell, some titles they own in certain areas are region free but then there's cases where some big hit titles/LEs released in one country and/or the US first are locked, while the later overseas/standard version is Region ABC. Warner is 99.9 region free. The extremely rare exception being the French Blu of The Fearless Vampire Killers (1080i and locked to B). |

Universal UK will RB lock a title when they only hold the UK rights. Presume a requirement of the studio they have licenced a title from. An example from some years back being Good Vibrations.
Where Universal own global rights as with all their big franchises like Jurassic Park, BTTF and Fast & Furious they are region free as don't mind where you buy from, as will still be Universal. |

Generally Universal & WarnerBros discs are unlocked (although there are the occasional locked disc), Disney generally don't lock their discs these days (many early discs are though) and other studios like Paramount, Sony etc. it can vary per release. It's a good idea to check listings on this site, often discs will be marked locked or unlocked by site/forum users. If the info isn't there on a listings 'Region Coding' page, you can always ask region status in the relevant threads. Often it's "boutique" labels that will consistently region lock discs, as they are licencing the film from a big studio and only have the rights for their region. For example Criterion & Shout Factory in the US will lock to region A, and UK labels like Second Sight & Eureka will lock to region B. |

If you post which title it is, we can tell you if there's any issues to look for. Some region free titles can have content that disagrees with some US equipment.
