2d can be a valid artistic choice in the same way that black and white can. If a director has a film they want to make and 3d isn't part of that plan, I'm okay with it. On the other hand if they're hired to do a job, and 3D is part of the job, then I expect them to deliver. Of course it isn't just an artistic choice, there are costs involved and something has to give.

My personal position is that there should be no expectation of 2d screenings for 3D movies. It means movies are taking up too many screens and this leaves less room in the market for other movies. Of course the big studios are happy with this situation because it means more screens for their blockbuster tentpole movies. If there's a smaller-scale 3D movie, cinemas don't want to tie up two screens to provide the option, so they get squeezed out of the market.

I would have liked to see many of my favorites filmed in 3D, as long as they did not lose any of the glorious film color and detail which might only be available through 2D 70mm, Todd-O, etc.

Thinking of Lawrence of Arabia and how magnificent that would look. But owning the restoration, would what goes into the making of 3D been able to capture everything we see with such detail to the point of the grains of dirt and fabulous colors of the desert? How about "South Pacific" from 1959? Could it capture all the majestic beauty of the Hawaiian Islands as the Todd-O cameras were able to and the color palates that were used?

Do wish Peter Jackson would convert his homage to the original "King Kong" in 3D. He has all the elements and can supervise it himself, just like James Cammeron did with "Titanic".

I àgree, as long as you are the artist. But for an end user to say that a movie shouldn't be available in 3d is nonsense.

well that's something we can both agree on.

The ridiculous situation of recent years is just how hard it can be to see an actual 3D movie actually in 3D, this despite the fact that the technological and cost issues have essentially been solved.

I'm always excited to see these. Rogue Nation was ok. I hope this next one is more like Ghost Protocol. That was was amazing! Especially if they doing something on the scale of the Burj, in IMAX 3D... it'll look awesome.

If there's one film that would have benefited from being in 3D, it would have been the first film. De Palma sets up his shots so well and doesn't resort to quick shot editing, it's a shame he's never tried directing a 3D film. I think the CIA break-in scene of the first Mission: Impossible would've been an awesome scene to see in 3D.

I wonder if this will be the final Mission Impossible film with Tom Cruise as the lead, and the reason they're going out big with a filmed 3D presentation.

The shot-on-video parody "This Ain't Die Hard" was in 3D

The original Die Hard I would agree with, it's more of a gritty and small scale action movie set in one location and with one guy going up against like a dozen villains, often one on one (the sequels obviously got much bigger, and one could easily argue the series lost something going away from its roots).

But the Bond and MI series are spectacle action pictures, based around huge set pieces and exotic locations, and I think they'd fit 3D just fine.

Oh well at least we're getting this one in 3D. love this franchise and the last one was the best IMO.
Didn't Brad Bird oversee the 3D conversion of The Incredibles? Granted that seems unlikely to ever see the light of day, but I think that is Disney's decision and not Bird's.

Watched LAWRENCE again last week and it is still a visual masterpiece. Did OKLAHOMA yesterday in the Todd-AO and when compared to the CinemaScope version included in the set it simply is a bench mark for high definition. Gordon MacRae riding through the cornfield is the closest I have ever seen to a glassless 3 dimensional image in a movie of it's age.

Cruise slamming his leg into that wall after the jump stunt. Ouch.
Really cool he's a motorcycle fan and owns his own bikes. I bet he had a lot to do with adding the cool motorcycle chase scene to Rogue Nation MI, which was my favorite scene in that cool film, and best in the series IMO.

Glad Rebecca Ferguson returns in this one.

I hope they're going for strong 3D. Fallout. Sounds interesting. I wonder if it's a fallout literally, of nuclear ash, or Fallout in the sense that after the last film's conclusion, everything goes wrong. Looking forward to this in 3D.

Paramount still does 3D (not like Warner and not every film), so for a film like this (also being the first MI film with 3D), it has to be released!

A bit worried that the poster only says IMAX and not IMAX 3D - my mother is also a fan of this series and I'd made plans to go see this at the full-size IMAX across the state with her specifically because it was shot with IMAX 3D digital cameras. If they only show it flat it'll be a major letdown.
