Glad I held off buying the Ultimate Edition, b/c I knew this was coming around the corner. Day 1 purchase!

Agreed on all counts!

I'm excited to see this thread! I was going to watch the old blu ray soon since I really love the aspects you pointed out earlier, but I can wait another two months or so now for sure.

Sometimes Im puzzled with your thoughts on this movie. You like to show your complaints about it (as seen on the Ultimate Edition forum) yet somehow praise it one way or another. You probably like it more than you originally think.

Same with me, I was going to rewatch the Blu ray this weekend but seen this thread so I can wait also. I hope it looks good and will be a good upgrade.

Ordered!!!!

Is what I'll say when it goes up for pre-order. LOL.

Really great news and I didn't buy the Ultimate Blu-ray cause I don't care too much about the extras. DTS:X -- whoooo hoo.

I am also happy I didn't get the standard blu-ray Ultimate Edition as I would rather watch the Extended Cut in 4K UHD more than anything else....and i've only owned the original two-disc DVD release so far.

I'm puzzled too! There are a few movies I go back and forth on and this is one of them. It has things in it I really dislike, but it also has lots of great stuff. I've always tried to express I'm conflicted on it. I just really liked it more last time, probably because I felt Skull Island completely lacked in story and characters, which made this flick stand out.

You later realized how much of a masterpiece this truly is, because it is.

But Im glad you reflected on it.

Love that cover. It's actually making me consider upgrading if that's the US artwork with a slipcover. I hate missing out on slips.

Eh. Same artwork as the Special Edition DVD. Which I still like but...

Wish they had gone a different route with something they've never done before.

Looks fine to me, it's just a cover anyway.

The movie came out over 11 years ago. Of course the CGI isn't going to match more recent features. It is probably the best ever when it came out in 2005. The detail in Kong's fur was pretty crazy good for the time

And it still looks absolutely stunning today, it did win Best Visual Effects for a reason. The stampede sequence I can admit looks a little flaky at times.

Kong is the only part of it that aged well but I was never a big fan of the design. It's not bad but it's not unique, either. It's just a large silver back. The new Kong looks more like the original but more streamlined.

I much prefer Jackson's look for Kong over this year's Kong look.

And bulkier. He even had a more menacing look which I much prefer.

I didn't like it at the time either. Kong looks great but I've always thought most of the rest looked rushed. Even beyond the actual CG quality though, I just don't like how Jackson took CGI as a call to do all the wacky, crazy insanity he could think of. King Kong and the Hobbit trilogy are just way too over the top and cartoonish in their action scenes for me.

That said, it's hard to deny he knows how to make a movie with proper characters, development and pacing. Skull Island is just a two hour excuse for action scenes, not even in the same ball park (though enjoyable).
