Thing is Blu-ray hasn't taken over the market.
IMO Blu-ray will probably disappear long before DVD does.

However, when I am not buying digital I buy Blu Ray because they have more special features most of the time.
Most panels coming out on the market are 4k (not necessarily HDR). Don't you think that in itself will make 1080p content be slowly and eventually go extinct

Yes, and a lot of my co-workers were still using VHS when I went to DVD...just sayin'

To answer your question 1080p content will disappear. Although DVD first appeared in 1995 that's 22 years. Blu-ray first appeared in 2006 if you added the 22 DVD's have been around that's 2028.
I agree. VHS was king at one point and DVD was looked at as UHD is looked at today by DVD users

If you go unto the sell/trade threads, how many are offering DVDs for sale or trade

Just a matter of time. Not sure why some are reading and not believing that is inevitable

Bluray hasn't even fully replaced DVD for that to even happen.

1080p TV's? That's already happening. If you're buying a new TV it's going to be 4K.

1080p content? Not anywhere near remotely anytime soon. It's still the majority of HD sales just as DVD is the majority of overall package sales. And lets face it, 1080p still produces reference quality results.

Maybe not in the immediate future, but in the next 10 years I can see how 1080p will be vastly reduced

Well yeah over the course of 10 years as UHD gets more prevalent. I wouldn't say "vastly" though. Lets remember that DVD still gets every single major Hollywood release over 20 years later. In fact, lets realize the sad truth about how there's tons of movies on DVD not released on bluray. Now apply that to 4K.

Yeah some 1080p stuff isn't going to be around much longer. I think regular Blu Rays will stay like DVD is ,but that is about it. I think Blu Ray has a good 10 years left. Then, UHD Blu Rays will take over.

It's called 'open discussion', where people discuss and share thoughts and opinions

Yes, but this is a stupid as the other member who created a thread that digital streaming was going to kill physical media years ago. Guess what, physical media and digital are still going strong. The sky isn't falling. DVD still sell and as long as that is happening it (and anything else) will survive. Now I do think that @-Gonzo- made a good point on BD being replaced by UHD before DVD goes away. Unfortunately when you make a thread like this in a BD/UHD forum you aren't going to get a unbiased response.

Will 1080p ever disappear?

No, it won't. The amount of content created in 1080p (and 480p) is too gargantuan to comprehend. It's not going anywhere.

Eventually 1080p TVs will be phased out, but not for a few years. And up-scaling is so good people won't even notice the difference when watching 1080p content on a 2160p display.

So BD has a greater chance to go extinct before DVD does? I mean it's already happening with 3D bluray so it's not too far fetched.
DVD is cheaper and it accommodates the low standards of the casual consumer.
I guess I've grown spoiled and detached and sometimes forget that most people dont watch tv thinking in terms of resolution, bitrate, 4K DI, or researching what cameras were used for filming this movie or that documentary [emoji15]

Oh dear lord. 1080p will not disappear. least I don't think so. There are a lot of content that will not make it to 4K! It's going to have a smaller selection than what regular bluray has now! But I know a lot of the newer stuff will be released on 4K discs.1080p Tv's yes I think will go away but not for awhile. All it's getting to now is they are wanting to upgrade all the time and that gets old really quick lol. Do you honestly think your going to see a lot of catalog titles on 4K? I seriously doubt it but it will have a good chunk just not what everything regular bluray has that's for sure.

Most people are oblivious to the amount of content yet to see the light of day in the many content owners vaults. There was a large influx of this converted to DVD earlier, some remastered to BD, but really with that gargantuan amount present today, there is still a ton of stuff yet unreleased to be converted.

With each new physical format standard you have this question of whether a older format will disappear, but as long as you have backwards compatibility designed in the player or media playback device, the format is relevant not obsolete.

Also there is a cost angle to all of this, it costs more to convert low res to high res, so conversion of older film content to 480P is wholly adequate for early film or broadcast content against physical media or streaming availability.

Most new releases are sold out quicker and harder to find used than regular bluray. What would that suggest?

That the quantity of media available for a given UHD title in inadequate at release time. You are misinterpreting stores selling out as higher demand where as it is a combination of mastering/distribution with higher associated costs compared to a DVD or BD issuance. If you notice the stores like BB get like 100 copies of BD's with 10 UHD BD's received.

"Will 1080p ever disappear"

LOL

Let me guess. DVD is 20 years old, and still didn't die, a lot of people are still buying them, they do NOT care about Blu-ray, HD, or whatever. So why 1080p should die ? Just explain.
