Both work independently of each other, yet somehow co-exist perfectly.
I'm in the middle of re-watching The Return (Episode 6), and the style and tone works perfectly for the story. I think if The Return tried to re-create the "Soap Opera" tone of season 1 and 2, it would have felt out of place and forced. I genuinely think The Return does a great job building off of Season 2 and incorporating a lot of the Twin Peaks "mythology" built up in the last half of season 2. |

The Original Series by far. Even though I love many aspects of the third season, I had a lot of issues with the whole "Dougie" plot (like many others). I just wanted more Cooper, and the Dougie stuff just seemed to go on far too long. There was still tons of stuff I enjoyed, and I did love the ending of the third season, but there were little bits and pieces that bothered me. Michael Cera's brief appearance drove me crazy with how awful it was. And there's that one episode that falls somewhere in the middle that's largely in black-and-white (which I have no issue with), but it's just like a montage of bizarre images set to music. Sometimes that can work, but it's often a tightrope...and when it doesn't work, it really doesn't work. I'm still happy that Lynch directed every episode and whatnot, and I loved the musical acts at the endings, but if I had to choose, I'm picking the Original Series. And I agree with whoever stated that that first episode of the series is right up there with the best two hours in episodic television history.
